Not emotive enough. It's subdued.
Hoskins is more energetic and steals the scenes from him.
Interesting, I expected the opposite actually, that it was overdone and too emotional/big. Never saw Hoskins"s Hook, will have to look it up. No, Hoskins played Smee. I think Prime meant that Hoskin's portrayal of Smee was better than Hoffman's Hook.

The little helper guy is more of an authority voice than his boss.

could be, but is that a problem? I felt like that was a deliberate directorial choice, not an unwanted side effect, no? They did make Hook kinda funny/loopy intentionally I think. BUT - I never read the book so I dont know if its in line with the authors intentions of course.

Same with Glenn Close's role. But I don't think Spielberg would ever be accused of making films that rely heavily on performance choices.
There's a few cases like Robert Shaw or Pete Postlethwaite but it is rare for him to have someone who gives such a strong performance that it dominates the film.

Don't think I've watched any version of Peter Pan since the Disney animated film or "Hook". I remember there was a "Lost Boys" TV movie but never watched it. And Jeremy Sumpter played him in 2003(?)
