holy shit! How did it take me so long to watch this movie? I remember my dad, buying this movie all the way back when we first got a DVD player and I think it was one of his favorites. I always thought I would get around to watching it but never did. Finally I have and I am glad. This movie ROCKS. Just from the opening scene alone when Stallone let Rooker's girlfriend die, an amazing intense scene, I was hooked. Awesome action, terrific villains, beautiful photography (these days it would be all blue screen) and a stirring score by Trevor Jones (whatever happened to him?). Also, the climax with the helicopter over the cliff clearly inspired the climax of Mission Impossible: Fallout. This might be one of my favorite action movies. Stallone also released Demolition Man that same year which is also an awesome movie with an awesome villain

Say what you want about Renny Harlin, he knew how to shoot an action movie.

"Wrong answer motherfucker!"
It bothers me that Delmar says "do you like soccer?" He would NEVER use "soccer." He would definitely say football and tell anyone who says "soccer" to fuck off.

Say what you want about Renny Harlin, he knew how to shoot an action movie. He knew how to shoot a horror movie, too. Nightmare 4 is a surprisingly colorful and visual movie. Almost like an Argento.

Renny Harlin directed both Die Hard 2 and Cliffhanger. Both are pretty great rip-offs of the original Die Hard. They follow the template to the letter, but Cliffhanger actually does a better job of it. It's Die Hard on a Mountain and this type of setting works really, really well for a movie of this sort. And John Lithgow is a delight.

Cliffhanger is awesome and John Lithgow is such an entertaining villain.
"You want to kill me, don't you, Tucker? Well, get a number and get in line."

Cliffhanger is indeed a very good action flick. Absolutely thrilling, with eye-popping action scenes and truly nasty villains.

One of Sly's best action pictures, helped enormously by the presence of Rooker, Lithgow and Linn. Thrilling opening and once the money lands in the mountains the pace never lets up. A lesson in sustained action thriller film making. Renny Harlin had his moments, this is one of them.

Hee, yep, it's a poor misstep, not helped by Fairbrass' accent. I mean he's British anyway so why was he trying to do an accent that sounded like an Aussie doing a British accent...

Finally watched this and really enjoyed it. The action and music are both amazing. The opening scene is especially effective.
I think it was maybe a tad too long, but it’s still a lot of fun.

Fun OTT action movie. The snowy mountain setting does a lot of heavy lifting. I think the characters are fun too and have good chemistry, and that can take a not very smart movie a long way. Good action scenes and John Lithgow hams it up in the best way possible. One of Stallone's better action movies.
It also has one of my favorite one-liners - "Season's over asshole." - Michael Rooker in one of his best roles as a good guy. Michael Rooker gets the Arnold Schwarzenegger-style bad-ass one-liner. Watching his terrifying performance in Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer and then as a cool heroic character in Cliffhanger will give you whiplash.
7/10

It really helps move the story along when you can’t wait to see them get cut down.

How does someone "finally watch" Cliffhanger? Is it like a special club that anyone can join or is there some kind of secret password to get in?

Michael Rooker was also very good. He is usually viewed as a bad guy (like in HENRY: PORTRAIT OF A SERIAL KILLER) or anti-hero (like Yondu) all the time. But here was one of his few straight good guy roles. Stallone and Rooker worked together again in GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 2 as well. In both movies they play partners who have issues with each other.
