I saw a movie in the mid fifties in which a minor character lived in a shack at the base of the Hollywood sign. He may have been a caretaker. I'm pretty sure it was a crime film. Someone suggested Down Three Dark Streets (1954), which I found on Youtube. Although there was a chase that ended at the sign, there was no shack or any one living nearby. I'm slowly closing in on most of the titles of partly remembered movies I saw all those years ago, but this one still eludes me.

If so, was it on a movie screen or on TV?

I saw it in a theatre. I must have been seven or eight years old at the time, which would make the year about 1955 or1956.

All the Low budget crime films from that period were b/w. I wish I could remember just one of the actors. It would be a clue to follow.

This site describes the Sign in 100 movies. It begins with 2019 films and then goes backwards in time. There are 10 pages with 10 movies per. I took a look at the older ones late in the list but didn't see anything that fit your memory. Good luck. hollywoodsign.org/category/the-sign-in-the-movies/
