I have an A/C that is a window unit because I primarily want to keep one section cool, and I can deal with other areas being warm-ish.
I just shut the door, and I'm fine.
What I really have a problem with, is the humidity. Even with the A/C running, I can be dripping with sweat and soaked, so I'm contemplating also adding a dehumidifier to the same area, but I don't know anything about them... I've heard they have ones that can just be emptied manually. I'm not looking for anything excessive, just something simple.
In California, I visited a friend who used one and if I recall, it really also cooled their house down as well. Anyone have any info? Thoughts? Ideas?

That is not good autumn. I am freezing my mahoneys off with my AC running. I need to turn it off now

They work fairly well... I picked up a small one at Walmart, that has a Humidity % level setting (35-80), or you can just let it run and run... When the bucket gets full, the unit shuts off, and beeps at you until you empty it. So no spillage... The air filter does need to be cleaned once in a while though. There are different sizes and prices.... You'll have to decide what works best for you. Having more than one might work better too... They many not work fast or perfectly for everyone's needs... but every little bit helps. ( Just to take that edge off you know. ) Be warned though, Mine works in a manner that it sends a bit of warm (dry) air back into the room... And so you'll have to decide if you want Warm Dry air, or Cool Wet air... But with the % setting it's not to hard to find a nice balance between the two. They say, an air conditioner can cool drier air better than humid air... I guess that makes sense, since dry air is just "oxygen", where as, humid air is both "oxygen" and water vapor. (More Molecules to cool down.) I also suggest that you use a fan or two as well to circulate the air... It creates that Wind Chill effect, and the wind will help get rid of a lot of sweat from your skin, and that will help make you feel better too. I use a combination of all three: Air Conditioning, De Humidifying, and Circulating Fans... and I can tell you it really does make dealing with the "Dog Days" of Summer much better...

We have a unit in the basement because it can get damp down there in the Summer. It's hooked up to the drain so we don't have to empty it. Love it! And the basement feels nice and comfortable and DRY.

That is not good autumn. I am freezing my mahoneys off with my AC running. I need to turn it off now I only sweat when it's extremely humid out. When it's dry and the A/C is running, I'm fine. I also have it set so the A/C goes on and off and doesn't run continuously, and I don't keep it frigid. Under normal circumstances I'm fine. However these past few weeks, the humidity has been excessive. My body has never handled humidity well.

Yes, I've noticed that. When it's warm (but dry) outside, the A/C is very effective. I also have an overhead fan that I run to distribute air, and that definitely helps. I do have a plug-in fan which I could also use, so I may try that as well. Good idea. Even when it's in the 80's (which for me is hot) or even 90's, and dry, I'm okay. But the humidity is what gets me, more than the temperature. I've had "arguments" with people where I'd say "it's so hot out" (which was how I felt) and they'd say, "it's not 'hot!'" Then I'd have to say, "Fiiiiine, it's not 'hot,' it's 'huuuuumid'!" Either way, I FEEL "hot" and very uncomfortable. Story of my life re: humidity. I think it's my immune system and a tolerance issue.
