2 always sounded right to me
In case of emergency - i.e. the regular catcher gets hurt, he could be used as a pinch hitter, catches Sundays to give the regular catcher a day off.
too bad for years - the Phillies have only rolled with one catcher.

Yup. In an emergency, that's who you plug in, but carrying 3 is superfluous absent expanded roster limits. Didn't Joe McEwing end up making an emergency appearance at catcher (probably for the Mets, but maybe my Cardinals)? But Baseball Reference doesn't have him playing an inning at catcher.
