It’s been some time since our last heated debate about smoking so... More than one million people have given up smoking since the Covid-19 pandemic hit, a survey for charity Action on Smoking and Health (Ash) suggests. Of those who had quit in the previous four months, 41% said it was in direct response to coronavirus. Separately, University College London (UCL) found more people quit smoking in the year to June 2020 than in any year since its survey began in 2007. Government advice says smokers may be at risk of more severe Covid symptoms. Between 15 April and 20 June, a representative sample of 10,000 people, enrolled by pollster YouGov on behalf of Ash, were asked about their smoking habits. The results were used to estimate the total number of people giving up smoking in the UK. www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-53403610

Now is not the time to quit. There's evidence that smoking kills the virus in the lungs on contact.
You have to remember there is an anti-smoking lobby which has an almost religious fervor to prevent the "sin" of smoking. Smoking is the new homosexuality. Lol such irony.
The anti-cig crowd points to complications in smokers AFTER they get the virus. They don't tell you that it may decrease your chances of acquiring the virus in the first place.

That also gets a mention in the BBC article...

That also gets a mention in the BBC article... Anti-smoking has become almost a religious cult belief at this point. Sure, there is no final word on whether or not nicotine kills covid on contact. But the anti-smoking cabal is scrambling to make sure it doesn't. Lol!
Once one catches any respiratory infection of course smoking is going to make it worse. If you get it, obviously, you quit smoking. But is nicotine preventative? It may be. People may be fools to quit now until we learn more.

But can nicotine help prevent the virus from attacking the lungs? If so is smoking a harmful substance that damages the lungs the most effective way of getting it into the body? Remember how preachy you were about paracetamol?

There's evidence that smoking kills the virus in the lungs on contact. Nicotine, not smoking.

I'm leery of all pharmaceuticals.
I just find it ironic that fools are quitting nicotine now when evidence shows that nicotine may thwart the corona virus.

But to complicate things the NHS recommended using paracetamol (and ibuprofen) if you develop symptoms.

I am an ex-heavy smoker. All the gum, law, therapy etc. is crap. YOU decide when to quit. It's not sexist to say I know many women who chose to quit when pregnant. Not easy, stress level 10, I guess.
I would not be surprised if the CV-19 was making some smokers link, respiratory failure, to 1-2 packs a day.
Personal choice.

I never started, didn't see the attraction I stopped smoking aged 11 when I was informed that you had to breathe it down into your lungs.

I'm smoking more than I did before. And I'm blowing smoke in people's faces. My point was that the stress and lack of stuff to do is causing me to feel the need to smoke more.

But as I said earlier in the thread, both French and Chinese studies show that smoking and nicotine may inhibit the corona virus from entering the lungs. Great times to be a smoker!!!

Yes, I know you aren't really blowing smoke in people's faces, I just thought maybe you thought I was being sarcastic. I don't buy that smoking protects against the virus and even the articles about it say there is no conclusive evidence. The most notable is that many people when seeing a doctor will say they don't smoke, even though they do.

Sorry, I'm a militant smoker and I believe the anti-smoking crusade has become a self-righteous pseudo-religious campaign of bitching, whining, and Prohibition. That being said, I know smoking is unhealthy and it's best to quit.
I'm not sure if it's conclusive or not that smoking inhibits the virus. But I do know if it is true there are forces in the healthcare industry which will do everything in their power to suppress any information. I just found the studies in favor of nicotine to be so deliciously ironic.
