The Dread Pirate Roberts There really was a "Dread Pirate Roberts" (Bartholomew Roberts, also known as Black Bart) who operated in the Caribbean in the early 18th century. He is reckoned by many to have been the most successful pirate of all time.

This was like Cutthroat Island, except if a Lucy Lawless lookalike played the role.
"The Tiger of the Seven Seas! The Girl pirate with a face of an angel!"

Cutthroat Island (1995) dir: Renny Harlin Reputedly the biggest lost-maker in Hollywood history. Hi, mucker From my review > A film of many flaws, with a reputation akin to it being the devil of big budget failures, it is, however, a wonderful piece of piratical entertainment - that is if you are prepared to see past the monetary excess. Famously cited as the film that bankrupted Caroloco Pictures, the truth is that Carolco was going under anyway, the studio had filed for bankruptcy before Cutthroat Island had even been released, the box office performance was irrelevant, it wouldn't have made a bit of difference. And while no amount of hard sell marketing could have gotten the film to make back the $98 million spent making it, it received no support from distributor MGM who were in the process of being sold, so finances for marketing were not available.

I think she knew she was miscast. Lucy Lawless would have been good for it. NATES AND HAYES was a decent pirate movie made in New Zealand with Tommy Lee Jones.
I think Pirates of the Caribbean took some ideas from it-as did Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom.
When they said the pirate film was dead, it was only because of the poor approach in the 80s like the Pirate Movie.

Swashbuckler 1976, starring Robert Shaw and Genevieve Bujold, tried to bring the genre back, but failed.
