13 years, $380,000,000
Actually reasonable, money wise. But has a 10+ year deal ever really worked out? He's in his prime, track record of winning, not a head case or a clubhouse cancer. He will be 41 when the contract is done.
Boy did the Red Sox fuck this one up. He should have been the next Williams, the next Yastrzemski. Instead he's the next Wade Boggs, the next Carlton Fisk. But Rusney Castillo and Nate Eovaldi are cashing their checks

My closest Red Sox friend has been stewing about this since the deal was done. I feel sorry for Alex Verdugo if my friend is an indicator of how Boston will treat him.

My guess is he told the Sox brass he wasn't going to re-sign in Boston. It's the only possible explanation.

I hate to keep saying this but THESE SILLY DEALS NEVER WORK OUT. Think the Angels front office doesn't vomit every time they cut a check for Albert Pujols? Even the Yankees hated paying A Rod.
Another factor, short players never have long careers. Excepting Yogi Berra, most pee wee' fade out about age 31-33. Joe Morgan, Kirby Puckett, Dustin Pedroia, Luis Aparicio, Tim Raines, Pudge Rodriguez. No one ever called Markus Betts "Stretch"

I'd like to be positive, but most of that could have been said about Pujols. Difference: Pujols was 4 years older, and the LA team that signed him didn't have 7 straight division titles.

You're also forgetting that Brycie is a bonafied Rock Star.
He has the 'It' factor - which is needed into today's game to bring in the ratings and draw kids to the game.
I couldn't pick Mookie Betts out of a line-up.
Just look at this Baseball Diamond Bodacious God -
Recognizable all over the World - I can't say the same about 'Mookie' - in fact - when people think of 'Mookie' they think of the old Met or the basketball player.

It was a long fade for Morgan, Raines, and Rodriguez. Morgan is still getting MVP votes at 38 (and still stealing 24 bases). All three have good age 35 seasons. That's nine more years for Betts, who benefits from better conditioning practices of today and not being a catcher.

But the dodgers won't be paying Betts for a "long fade". And, yeah, you can argue Mookie's "AIS Factor" (AIS = asses in seats). but how many people say "Oh boy, going to see the Angels and Albert Pujols" in 2020? Tough to tell because the Halos have one or two other attractions.
And Mookie very well could become an icon in Dodgerland. He could be the biggest position player since, who? Garvey? Snider?

Yeah, probably Garvey. Which is a knife in me because I LOVED Piazza. In his five full seasons in LA Piazza was ninth, sixth, fourth, second, and second in NL MVP voting. Trading him away really dropped my love for the team, to the point where today I follow the Padres more than the Dodgers and feel conflicted when the two play each other. I'm turning 50 here in four months; I was 17 the last time the Dodgers won a World Series. The problem with these ten year contracts is nobody is winning the World Series with them. If Betts gets a couple in Los Angeles, I think they'll be fine with paying for the twilight years.

Smart move by Mookie imo. From what I remember Boston traded him because he was dead set on hitting free agency so the Sox wanted to make sure they got something for him. I imagine after the pandemic his agent maybe changed his tone about being so adamant on free agency. Teams are gonna lose tons of money this year so who all will be looking to spend big in free agency in a few months? Smart to get a deal done long term while he can.
