Fresh from a robust earnings report that saw it add 10 million subscribers during the pandemic, Netflix has just set its most financially ambitious feature film so far. Ryan Gosling and Chris Evans are set to star in The Gray Man, with Joe & Anthony Russo directing their first blockbuster since setting the all-time global box office record with Avengers: Endgame two years ago. The intention here is to create a new franchise with a James Bond-level of scale and a budget upwards of $200 million.
The Russo’s AGBO is producing, and the script was written by Joe Russo, with a polish by Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely, who scripted the Russo-directed Captain America and Avengers films and who are Co-Presidents of Story at AGBO. It is based on the 2009 Mark Greaney novel that introduced the Gray Man, a freelance assassin and former CIA operative named Court Gentry.
The action thriller is a deadly duel between killers as Gentry (Gosling) is hunted across the globe by Lloyd Hansen (Evans), a former cohort of Gentry’s at the CIA. The Gray Man turned into a bestselling book series, and the expectation is that Gosling will continue in multiple installments. The project was developed years back at New Regency as a Brad Pitt/James Gray vehicle, but it stalled. The Russos have quietly been developing it for years.
“The movie is a real mano a mano between those two great actors, who represent two different versions of the CIA, in what it can be, and what it can do,” Anthony Russo told Deadline. “For those who were fans of Captain America: Winter Soldier, this is us moving into that territory in more of a real world setting. That’s what this movie really means for us.”
Said Joe Russo on the film’s scale: “The intention is for it to be competitive with any theatrical and the ability to do with with Gosling and Evans is a dream for us. The idea is to create a franchise and build out a whole universe, with Ryan at the center of it. We have all committed to the first movie and that’s got to be great to get us to the second movie. These are master assassins and Gosling’s characters gets burned by the CIA and Evans’ character has to hunt him down. We have a great working relationship with Netflix, and we go back almost 20 years with Scott Stuber. We formed AGBO to be an agnostic storytelling company, where we figure out the best platform. We think Netflix is the perfect place for this film.”

Given the writer has collaborated with Tom Clancy, they probably want this to draw in the Jack Ryan crowd.

During a red carpet interview with Variety at the Spider-Man: No Way Home premiere, The Gray Man co-director Joe Russo provided an update for the highly anticipated Netflix movie. He and his team are currently in post-production, which will likely be finished in February 2022, followed by a release in the summer. Read what he had to say below: "...We're working on The Gray Man right now with Ryan Gosling and Chris Evans, slated for a release this summer. We're hard at work at editorial on that. I think we'll probably lock picture on that sometime in February. We got some big VFX to work on in it. So scoring,VFX all take place until we release it." screenrant.com/gray-man-movie-release-window-netflix-chris-evans/

I'm really looking forward to this one (The Gray Man).
I read the book months ago (when I first heard that Ryan Gosling was doing the movie about it) and I loved it.
I like Ryan Gosling a lot, so I'm excited about this upcoming release.
I've had Netflix for a long time.

Ryan Gosling won me forever as a fan for his portrayal of Neil Armstrong in First Man.
He managed to capture Armstrong's nerves of absolute steel when he landed on the Moon.
Armstrong had been a test pilot so he knew how to handle even the most amazing and dangerous situations as if he was just out for a carton of milk somewhere.
Gosling was perfect in this.

Interesting comments by Joe Russo about movie trends:
Speaking in a talk during the 2022 D.I.C.E. Summit, four-time Marvel Studios director Joe Russo was asked about the concept of repeating trends, specifically the multiverse concept that is permeating the MCU and others. Russo likened it to simply being the latest thing that studios were eager to exploit to appease their bottom line, noting that fans should expect for the corporations to do something interesting but the creatives in the room have the juice to push back and actually try something new.
"The corporate agenda is: Do you like chocolate ice cream? Well here chocolate ice cream with sprinkles, here's chocolate ice cream with fudge...It's their job to turn the money printer on," Russo said. "It's the creative's job to say, 'Well sh-t, I don't know if I want to watch that.'"
IGN reports that Russo said the creative persons working on such projects have the ability to "push back against the money printer," and strive for something different.
"So yeah, too much of one thing is a bad thing, but I think there are enough creators and innovators in the space where you can expect to be surprised," Russo added. "Just don't expect corporations to surprise you."

which sucks because theres less incentive at all to challenge it and maintain the status quo as well.

yay we only need to wait a few decades as well. I'll see ya then! Interestingly alot of these properties which Netflix has distributed would've had a total flop theatrical run had we gotten these all 5 years ago as well.
