Avatar: The Way of Water producer Jon Landau explains the thinking behind the tulkun, ilu, and skimwing, three new aquatic creatures on Pandora. The idea was to create a creature that was on the scale of Pandora. A tulkun is, like, 300 feet long. They are a sentient species and as intelligent in their own way as the Na’vi are in theirs. [...] like a giant flying fish but keeps its trail in the water – its tail is its propulsion. The Metkayina [water tribe] and all the reef people use them as their military mounts when they’re going into combat. They can go 60 miles per hour for endless periods of time.

I never saw the first film in 3D when it was first released. I'm definitely seeing the re-release in 3D before The Way of Water hits theaters.

I never saw the first film in 3D when it was first released. I'm definitely seeing the re-release in 3D before The Way of Water hits theaters. I think you'll really enjoy it! IMO the groundbreaking cgi/motion capture/3D all added to the movie going experience when I saw Avatar opening night with my friends a long time ago... in a galaxy far far away (okay December 2009 to be exact ) I'm glad Cameron & co are re releasing Avatar in IMAX 3D before its sequel comes out. Its actually a really smart move too. The vast amount of young people were either way too young to have seen Avatar in theaters or IMAX 3D (the way James Cameron intended to be seen in) way back in 2009/2010 or weren't even born yet lol.

Same. I could have been convinced. Maybe. But not at 3 hours. I do not like the first movie. I'm not watching 3 more hours.

In 2009, China was beginning to emerge as an important market for Hollywood, something cemented by the barnstorming performance of James Cameron’s Avatar. Though the movie was a box office sensation around the world, it vastly exceeded expectations in the Chinese market, going on to earn a whopping $250 million in the country (a figure topped up by a successful rerelease in March 2021). 20th Century Studios are clearly hoping to repeat that success with Avatar: The Way of Water later this year, with China Daily and Deadline confirming that the China Film Group has been treated to a screening of exclusive footage in 3D, 4K and high-frame-rate, complete with an introduction from Cameron himself. Right now, Avatar: The Way of Water‘s Chinese release is by no means assured, as multiple recent Hollywood blockbusters have failed to open in China. Even the mighty Marvel Studios has fallen short of the China Film Group’s standards with Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, Eternals, Spider-Man: No Way Home, and Thor: Love and Thunder all being denied release for various reasons. As such, this early push to show some love to China (and specifically to the China Film Group) is undoubtedly a carefully calculated move designed to ease Avatar: The Way of Water past the notoriously fickle censors. It’s likely that the film’s script and story have already been tailored for this purpose, so chances are probably good it’ll see release. wegotthiscovered.com/news/avatar-the-way-of-water-starts-china-push-with-exclusive-footage-introduced-by-james-cameron/

Fans have been waiting long for James Cameron’s Avatar: The Way of Water, but when details about the movie finally started trickling in what surprised many was the return of Sigourney Weaver in the new role of Kiri, a Na'vi teenager. While we have seen the character posters, not much is known about the character. Speaking to Elizabeth Banks for Interview magazine, Weaver called playing the character her “biggest stretch.”
Departing from her original character, Dr. Grace Augustine, the doomed head of the Avatar Program in 2009s Avatar, Weaver's new character, Kiri is a member of the Na'vi and Jake and Neytiri's adopted daughter. The actor said that she cannot divulge the details about the movie, but she revealed that “it's the biggest stretch I get to play in every possible way." She further told Banks, "I think if Jim Cameron didn't know me really well, he wouldn't have cast me as something as goofy as this.”
The actor further elaborated on her relationship with the Academy Award-winning director saying, “I know he’s going to present me with really unique challenges, and he’s not going to be shy about getting what he wants.” And with Kiri, the actor seemed to have cherished the challenge as she had to “work in a completely different way to play this character, a very physical way." She spoke about having to do a lot of parkour, burpees, and freediving in preparation for the sequel. As a result, she can now hold her breath for six-and-a-half minutes. She added, “Don’t you love these jobs where you have to learn some really outlandish thing that you keep with you for the rest of your life? Freediving, especially, I’m grateful that we spent a year doing that.”

I don't know how a 72-year old Sigourney Weaver is going to pull off playing a teenager. Even with all the motion cap stuff, her teenage character is still going to sound like a 72-year old woman unless there are post-production changes to her voice to sound younger.
