I'm watching Secrets & Lies for this thread and find Brenda Blethyn's performance one-note and overacted. Every line is delivered in the same irritating whine. She kinda drags the film down. Jean-Baptiste on the other hand is very subtle and believable. On that note, I don't see her as Supporting.

Added Diane Keaton and Meryl Streep to my Best Actress list. (Just watched Marvin’s Room.) I thought Keaton and DiCaprio were excellent in this film but Streep was rather mannered. She’s okay but I don’t think she’s worthy of consideration in a strong year.

I do feel that Leigh makes good use of Blethyn’s limits, but in a year this good for actressing I feel she was over-rewarded. Jean-Baptiste is much better, yeah, although I found it hard to swallow that she was Blethyn’s daughter. She’s pretty much a co-lead, true - the film is about both women. I do love S&L, though, and accept Blethyn’s rather touching ham as part of the fabric of the film. Blethyn’s follow-up nomination for Little Voice is one of the worst performances I have ever seen nominated for any major award, and I include the Razzies in that.

She’s okay but I don’t think she’s worthy of consideration in a strong year. Yeah, I ranked Keaton above Streep on my list, but I still thought Streep was quite good, very convincing in her role (almost Cher-like in this movie). I think Streep makes her performance seem so effortless that we almost tend to take it for granted. I agree on DiCaprio, he was better in this role than I thought he’d be.

They don't look a damn thing alike, no. Though I can't really fault the actors. Does Blethyn whine her way through that one, too?

Her S&L performance is a model of subtlety by comparison - imagine it turned up to 11.
