So.......I live in an apartment building, and have already run into this problem once in the year and a half since I've lived here, and find myself wondering what the general consensus is with taking others things out of a washing machine or dryer that you need to use, when the previous user's cycle is finished, and they have not yet done so themselves....and for clarification, I'm talking about a limited number of washing machines and dryers, in a relatively small apartment building (roughly 45 tenants in a three floor building, which has two washing machines and two dryers per floor (total of 12 machines in the entire building), for everyone to use......and not that it matters at all, but the cost here currently is $1.25 for each wash or drying cycle.....so a total of $2.50 for each load of clothing to be washed and dried (for those that might find it interesting to know what others pay for use of their wash machines/dryers). Your thoughts ??   SAVE FERRIS |

As long as they put them in the basket left there and don't throw them all over the place in a fit of pique bordering on rage because I was 5 minutes late because Old Lady Finney button-holed me in the hall to complain about the cost of doing the laundry.
Edit: $3 for large washer and .25 for each 10 minutes of dryer time !

Ah, you've come to the right place. I would guess that over 90% of apartment dwellers, here, have the same set up that you have, OR use a public laundromat. There are gazillions of them. I use a laundromat that is about 1/2 block from my building, which is only 2 flats.
I debated between 1 and 2, and I think that 2 is probably the way that most people feel. Ideally, you want to clear your own washer/dryer. The consideration that pushed me toward 1, is that I'm one of those customers who doesn't stay at the "mat" during the cycles. I live very close, so I load the washer, then go home and set a timer, to know when to go make the transfer to the dryer, then set the timer again, to know when to retrieve my clothes.
I "undertime" a little, to increase the chances that I'll be present when the cycle ends. But, I feel that I have to take a no-problem position, in case I'm not there when someone else needs a machine.
In almost 3 decades of using this facility, my clothes have been taken out of the machine (probably) fewer than 20 times. Management has posted a sign permitting the practice, and asking that people be considerate. They also provide ample "carts" in which to put the clothes that have been removed. This laundromat, and the deli/cafe next door, make a kind of neighborhood gathering place. It's very friendly. Many get something from the deli, then take a magazine from the "mat," to read while they sip 'n eat.

divtalIn all my wash and dry cycling I have never once been removed due to lateness. Other residents say that they have had to remove clothes so that the washer/dryer can be used because of the yahoo in B19 who habitually leaves his things there overnight. Local laundromat is / was used by a motel and the washers/ dryers midmorning are all in use. Odd that they don't have an in-house laundry but it can be worked around. BIG washers there for bed covers and sleeping bag type wash.

I wouldn't have any issue at all if someone took my stuff out and put it in my laundry basket if I made them wait. But I'd never make anyone wait. To be honest I don't have the nerve to take other people's stuff out (though making me wait annoys me to no end).
