RIPLEY’S GAME has nothing of what made THE TALENTED MR. RIPLEY so good. It sacrifices most of the psychological aspects just so it can be a boring spy-like thriller. John Malkovich's performance is good (considering that he’s stuck playing a one-dimensional version of the title character), but Dougray Scott's is weak. 3/10 When I read that the title character's crime in RIPLEY UNDER GROUND would involve accomplices, I thought it would be out of character... but I had to give it a chance. It turns out that these accomplices don’t know how far he’s willing to go. Therefore, the movie could’ve worked if they hadn’t been such unrealistic cartoons. They ruin the suspenseful atmosphere. That being said, this is still closer to the 1st movie than the previous installment in terms of plot, tone and characterization. Even if I don't compare him to his 2 predecessors, Barry Pepper’s performance doesn't stand out (positively or negatively). When it was revealed that HÉLOÏSE PLISSON had moved the body, I thought "Are you kidding me?!" but, looking back, it made sense. At first, her games with RIPLEY were just flirting but, at one point, they started to feel like manipulation. That’s because she is manipulative... and crazy... like him. They’re a match made in Hell! 5/10 ------------------------------------- You can read comments of other movies in my blog.
