I disagree with Roger Ebert. This film was much better than Ripley's Game.

Good performances all around, tense story.

Tragically dull considering that the novel is such a page-turner. Also Ripley comes over as a naive love-struck boy scout, and not the cynical schemer from the book.
Why is it that all Ripley movies are mediocre or bad? Okay I haven't seen Wender's The American Friend, but Plein Soleil dropped the ball by completely turning the book's morale on its head. Ripley's Game had probably the best Ripley with Malkovich, but it felt like a made for TV movie. Ripley Under Ground lacked all the moral complexity of its source material.
Perhaps the new TV-series will be more succesful.

Give me some specifics please, otherwise I don't see the point of your post.
