A couple of months later my grandfather kissed his wife and new born son goodbye and said not to worry dolly, they are only Frogs. We will kick their backsides and be back before you know it.
My grandfather was an intelligent man, but restricted his reading to the sports pages. So in a world without TV or radio he naturally assumed that the UK was going to war with the French. After all, the British had been doing that for a thousand years so it seemed natural somehow.

For most of history the British and the French have been at war against each other, so for most of the 1000 years it was the French against the British not with them.

I'm not much for alternative history, but it's fun to think of what history would have looked like if A-H had backed down or if Franz Ferdinand had skipped the visit to Sarajevo altogether. The Great War probably would have happened anyway. The European Great Powers were tap dancing in a mine field with the hard alliances. But any oddball thing might have changed it. Franz Ferdinand takes the throne and gives concessions to the Austrian minorities. Nicholas II dies suddenly and Russia descends into anarchy under the sickly Alexei before war starts.

I actually like to wonder about the Central powers victory in World War 1 which is far more likely than the "Nazis won world war 2" yet not nearly as explored. German victory means no Nazi Germany so I wonder how things would've turned out.

Oh yes the great war would have happened anyway. Germany wanted a war with Russia and the general staff wanted it before 1917, because by 1917 Russia would be to strong for Germany. My guess if the war had not happened in 1914 it would have happened at some point between 1916 and 1924. The thing is that Russia was on the right path when world war 1 broke out.

Most probably already know it but the Slavs who assassinated Ferdinand failed originally and then just happened to run into him a day or so later and got the job done on take 2.

That is correct only it was a few hours later not a day later. But what is also a bit funny to think about is that if the driver had not taken the wrong turn on the 28 of July 1914, the whole history of Europe and the world would have changed completely. Its like a what if question of history What if the driver of Franz Ferdinand had not taken the wrong turn and had not ended up in front of Princip. What happened on the 28th of July 1914 started one of the biggest changes of events in history that can be felt to this day.

So the driver had to stop and the car had to be slowly pushed off the wrong road and back on to the Appel Quay. Princip noticed this hubbub. Had the car been able to go into reverse like all of ours today, the Archduke might have passed unnoticed. The fates weren't kind to Franz Ferdinand that day

True............its almost like it was ment to happen. Like the Titanic. So many things went wrong, any one of which would have kept the ship from sinking. No binoculars, the Atlantic was calm, almost like glass (no white breakers around the iceberg), the course change south (looked good, but turned it right into that berg), where the lookouts spotted the iceberg, too late to miss, just to hit at a glancing blow.
You would have thought that with all the royal/VIP assassinations, Umberto of Italy, Empress Elizabeth of Austria, George I of Greece, PM Peter Stolypin of Russia, President William McKinley, the Austrians would have ramped up security just a bit.
