I watched The Meg the other day. Passed the time well enough. No classic though. Would have benefited from an R-rating, but could have been much worse.

I watched The Meg the other day. Passed the time well enough. No classic though. Would have benefited from an R-rating, but could have been much worse. I suppose it could have been worse, but it's pretty bad as is. All characters are the cliche stereotypes you'd expect, but I kinda thought that we'd left the punkish 'hacker' type person with an infuriating hairstyle behind in like 2003, and the Chinese financing/box office ploy influence is felt all too heavily. It's as dumb as you'd expect, and not enough fun to even at that ratio. Evidently, Jason Statham was pissed off when he saw it because he was expecting an R rating and asked the director 'Where's the blood?' That may have helped, especially at the end where this giant shark is at a crowded beach but basically just doesn't do anything. People apparently like the book, which I gather is written with a fairly serious tone, but obviously it's a bunch of crazy nonsense, and more crazy and more nonsense would have made the movie a more enjoyable experience. I have not read the book, but I understand it opens with the titular shark leaping out of the water and eating a T-Rex 100s of millions of years ago, and climaxes with the main character getting swallowed on purpose to harpoon the shark's heart from the inside in his mini-sub and scuba gear. If the movie had more absurd and more outrageous it would have been a much better time than this lame, dull, ordinary version we got. Just for the fuck of it here is a quote I saw someone cite from the LA Times book review of Meg: A Novel of Deep Terror that was pretty fucking amusing: "The book is horribly written, and the science is just as dire" an “outrageously awful book, crammed with egregious errors of fact and stuffed to the gills with writing so terrible that it would insult the intelligence of a sea cucumber” That at least sounds less boring than the movie.

I watched it on a plane, flying home from Iceland. I'll watch movies whilst flying that I may have had a passing interest/morbid curiosity in but otherwise don't care if I don't get the full viewing experience that I get at home with my setup or in theaters. Others have included Terminator: Genesys (ugh), Fant4stic and Amazing Spiderman 2. The Meg was pretty easily the "best" of those 4, although that's an admittedly very low bar. Least terrible might be a more apt term.

As a completely opposite example of the same thing; people seemed to hate the Aronofsky movie Mother!, but I watched it on like the 19th hour of flight time coming home from New Zealand, and in like 45 mins sleep in 2 days, and it hit me like the waking nightmarish fever dream that I think it was meant to be, because I was already in that state. Maybe that movie is actually terrible, and maybe it's not effective, but I think it hit me exactly the way it was supposed to. I also didn't have any expectations for Missing Link, but enjoyed it on the plane. I don't like James Wan, but I watched Aqua Man and a bunch of the spinoffs of his lame ghost movies on flights and enjoyed them in that context, and would probably never have bothered if I wasn't in the air.

Loved the clichéd nonsense of the Meg!
My favourite scene was when they when to recruit "The Stath" even although he's retired, doesn't do that kind of work anymore, after the earlier tragic events.
"I don't do that anymore" says The Stath, "so let's just sit down and have a couple of beers, then you lads can be on your way"
"Your ex-wife was on that ship" (or suchlike)
*** Instant cut to the The Stath's chopper (helicopter!) Landing on the rig ***
😂 Brilliant stuff. Must watch it again...

I'd be curious to see how it goes in a normal state of mind, but I respect the audacity of the weirdness of it regardless. Well we can be jealous of each other since you mentioned coming home from Iceland, which is probly my next prioritized location. I really went to Australia and then spent a weekend in and around Aukland. I loved my time in Oz, but if and when I go back I think I'll reverse that itinerary. The city of Aukland wasn't especially exciting, but the landscape surrounding it, especially the islands were as gorgeous as you'd imagine; but I just didn't see nearly enough of the country as I'd want. So next time, if travel is ever possible again (though I'm likely immune now, so maybe they'll let me in...) I'll spend most of the time seeing other areas of NZ.

I think I'd need a minimum of 2 weeks in Australia/NZ to maximize the experience. Iceland is AWESOME and it's a pretty easy trip. From NY it's only about 4+ hours to and fro. Just a stunningly beautiful place and the people are wonderful. We stayed in Reykjavic the first and last day, and spent 5 days in between driving around the entire country, visiting different sites. Unfortunately, we didn't catch the Northern Lights but it's an incredible place and I'll definitely be going back. You can easily do a long weekend there and pack in a bunch of sites if you're motivated to tackle as much as possible like my wife and I are.

This is really eerie.
Get a whole JAWS vibe with the below.
Here's a pic of where the New York woman was killed while she was up in Maine.
This doesn't look like your typical sandy beach city/town along the coast where you just see endless sandy beach stretched for miles and miles and look out and see endless ocean. Looks like a small little community like Amity in Jaws.
What's a Great White doing in these waters? Obviously feeding so there's got to be food for them. I knew there was a seal population up in Chatham, Massachusetts where the Great White population has exploded over the years; however wasn't aware there were an abundance of seals up in Maine. I didn't know Great Whites went that far up the coast - unless this is just a rogue. It's the first fatal Great White Shark attack in Maine's history. Experts state the woman was probably mistaken for a seal as she was wearing a black wet suit.
ON a side note, I watched Deep Blue Sea 3 last night, it was dreadfully awful. Just ended up fast forwarding and watched it in about 15 minutes.

We were gone for, I think, 17 days, but like 2 and half days of that is spent on a plane. We did the majority of that time in Australia and still would have needed a lot more time to hit everything we would want to. It's obviously a huge country and things are really far apart so you gotta prioritize your spots for your time. That's exactly the Iceland trip I've heard recommended. Everyone seems to hit the capital and then rent a car to drive the coast. I'd mostly want to see the northern lights, but of course there's no guarantee. Either way, that's definitely on the list.

I vaguely remember #2, I don't remember anything about it, just that it came out, cheesy low budget poorly written movie. Straight to DVD type.

Yeah it's cheap and terrible. There's not much to remember about it other than the one ridiculous scene when a shark is eavesdropping on someone's conversation from just outside the hull of the ship.

I always used to swim out beyond the breakers at the beach. Sometimes I would try to be the one farthest from the shore. Yeah, probably not a good idea.

Now 5 tagged great whites along our coast, including one very close to Oak Island. Greedy fucking sharks!
