Like This one game dragon warrior 2. I'm saying which games are like dragon warrior 2 because they have a similar difficulty in them? Because dragon warrior 2 had the most perfect difficulty out of most rpg japenese style rpg games. So basically this game is in the top 20 games for me.
Basically i would assume that phantasy star games or at least one of them had a similar difficulty. But i have no clue really.

Dragon Warrior 2 was great. Might be the best of the series, really (though DW3 is more fun... it's tough to pick one)
if you haven't played the Phantasy Star games, check out the first one (sega master system, 1988); it's really good, in a Dragon Warrior 1 type of way
i'd skip the next 2, but Phantasy Star 4 (Genesis, 1995 or so) is totally worth playing. It's almost as good as Chrono Trigger
if you like old-school style RPG's, also check out the Lufia series Lufia & the Fortress of Doom (SNES, 1993) and Lufia 2: Rise of the Sinistrals (SNES, 1995) is amazing.
Breath of Fire 2 (SNES, 1995) is also really good. you can skip the first one; it was like Capcom's first rpg, and there's little, if any continuity.

If it is, the more cryptic the better for me.

hmm.. that's hard to answer. you can't really be more cryptic than Dragon Warrior 2, heh. of the games i mentioned, probably Phantasy Star 1 is the "most" cryptic (cryptic meaning confusing, not knowing where to go/what to do exactly). Zelda 2 is pretty cryptic but it's more of an action-RPG than a traditional one. Faxandu as well (also on the NES)... not quite a "clone" of Zelda 2, but there are definite similarities. Dragon Warrior 3 is also kind of confusing, if you're not reading a guide/FAQ and obviously Castlevania 2: Simon's Quest. Honestly, after the NES-era ended, games kind of stopped being cryptic. Maybe check out the Dark Souls games? Dark Souls 1 might be what you're looking for, but DS2 is good, and so's Bloodborne. also, the Fallout games (Fallout 1 and Fallout 2). New Vegas isn't really "cryptic" in any way, but it's also really fun, and way better than Fallout 3 or 4. and, oh shit, i'd be stupid not mention Earthbound (SNES, 1995) very old-school style RPG, but in a "modern" (like, early 1990s or so) setting the Angry Video Game Nerd did a 40-minute episode about it
