So I am doing my annual Star Wars rewatch, which began yesterday with a glorious screening of The Phantom Menace on May 1st, continued tonight with Attack of the Clones and will proceed accordingly up to and including Return of the Jedi on May 6th, and it got me wondering: in what order do you guys watch the movies when you rewatch them?
Edited to add: yes, I'm aware "traditional" Machete calls for the omission of I, but I've included it. Deal.

dude, I originally watched them by numbers (I to VI), which was a huge mistake. By Ep III you become a fan of Palps and how he pushes all into darkness, and you want to see him bleed, and so you eagerly pop in IV - the heralded classic and masterpiece!!!- and
- Palps is not there! The dismanteling of the senate/Republic is only mentioned en passant... - all is dumbed down to a cheesy 70ies Space Western - Vader is there, but pathetically bickering and mocked by some mid level losers; he even tortures his daughter without noticing her looking and feeling like Padme (what about the Force downloaded, do you have to be a Mary Sue for that?) - Obi Wan becomes a pathological old liar (why), even letting Luke face Vader without telling the truth, same with Yoda (thanks convoluted OT twist writing) - Luke and Leia are lame, even flirting, and Obi says nothing when Luke gets the hots for hologram Leia (WTF!) - in the end Palps get defeated and outwitted by some teddy bears (no joke)
You must watch them chronologically first time, or you will not appreciate the OT as a narrative.

Do you think Machete order (IV, V, I-III, VI) would mitigate this at all or no? yeah, interesting perspective from your POV, bitter experience from mine. I am not against seeing I to VI orderly at second viewings (knowing what is coming) though. As for the Machete order, that sounds good in theory and it mitigates a lot on the narrative level, but it's still a form of interruptus (very unsatisfying for both trilogies and the viewers): You want one storyline (Luke-Vader-Empire conflict) to be resolved, but not have it interrupted by a extended prequel-flashback (of 3 movies) ushering in another storyline. I just don't swing that way...

The main thing Machete does is preserve the end of Empire, but like you said it then presents other issues in terms of story flow etc.

Do you think Machete order (IV, V, I-III, VI) would mitigate this at all or no? i wonder then if rogue one would help this transition at all? would you mix it in? it would also not have the emperor but at least you would see more of what his empire has become and eventually darth vader acting cool for a few minutes. on a side note: i have made a rogue one/new hope edit and i have to say the transition from huge budget star wars film to the flimsy sets of the tantive iv is a bit disappointing. though i love a new hope so no real fuss.

To what extent did you edit it? Just stitch up the end of Rogue One with the beginning of A New Hope? Or did you intersperse them a bit more?

To what extent did you edit it? Just stitch up the end of Rogue One with the beginning of A New Hope? Or did you intersperse them a bit more? starts off with a long time ago... the star wars theme plays as "star wars" pulls back from the camera in very slow motion, no scroll. pans down from space to corascont (a slowed down clip from ep II opening, before padmes ship enters the scene). which continues with an hour and 15 minute edit of mostly the finale of rots, with 4 deleted scenes, 2 featuring mon mothma and jimmy smitts, added back in. ends with beru and owen holding baby luke, fading to black and then we see a title card with 11 years later and rogue one begins. after young jyn goes and hides another title card saying 6 years later shows, the rogue one title is cut out. at the end of rogue one as the tantive iv takes off into hyperspace i used a side scroll that goes into a new hope right after the camera pans down to tattooine and begins the film. i also added a cut clip of vader walking with a general or something talking about the rebels that was used in the holiday special? or just a deleted scene. i cut it before vader speaks because it's some other guy's voice, this was placed right before a new day on tatooine arrives and they show the hole luke and his aunt and uncle live in, luke has already left with c3po to go find r2.

a new hope empire return attack of the clones phantom menace rots Interesting. You and Jan both like "Clones" the best of the prequels! i noticed that. i think phantom menace is a great adventure family film with some flaws but looks amazing. clones is more mature and still a great adventure with less flaws and has a great beginning, middle and a lot going on in the end. i only really like the second half of rots except for a few scenes in the first half.

I always underrate Clones in terms of the prequels and then enjoy it more on a rewatch than I remembered. It's great.
