TROLLS PART 2: WORLD TOUR has a lot of the same elements that made its predecessor enjoyable, but it's less funny and it misses the mark with the new premise. You see, Queen Poppy and Branch from the pop tribe find out that there are other tribes: Rock, funk, country, techno and classical. I know things have to be simplified in a kids movie. Therefore, I'll ignore the fact that a lot of genres share the same roots, that classical refers mostly to the time period rather than the style itself, that it should be electronic instead of techno, and that the songs performed by the rock tribe are only hard rock. What I can't ignore is that there's no hip-hop, even though it, pop and rock are arguably "the main three." Instead, there are trolls who seemingly don't have their own tribe yet they perform other genres: Reggaeton (a sub-genre of hip-hop!), yodeling (if that's considered a genre, then beatboxing should be too!) and jazz. Oh, and also K-pop. What?! That style is a little different than American pop, but it's still fucking pop! And where did they get the name from if Korea doesn't exist in this universe?! There are lines like "Pop killed music," so screenwriters Jonathan Aibel, Glenn Berger, Maya Forbes, Elizabeth Tippet and Wallace Wolodarsky are going for some kind of commentary about this art form and its industry. If that's the case, why they did choose the rock musicians as the ones who want to take over the world when, in real life, that genre got screwed over throughout the 2010s? One of the subplots is that Branch doesn't know how to tell Poppy that he loves her... which he already did in the 1st installment (when he sang Cyndi Lauper's TRUE COLORS). I don't get it. Did the characters forget about it? Did the writers? 5/10 ------------------------------------- You can read comments of other movies in my blog.
