There are some performers who are hard to catch nursing the blues. If they're not upbeat, they're at least in there fighting the good fight. Penny SerenadeGrant gives in: he's got 'em bad, and that ain't good. The Miracle Of Morgan's CreekNormally ebullient, Betty Hutton exhibits dejection (a normal condition for companion Eddie Bracken). The Opposite SexSunny June Allyson becomes inconsolable when realizing on her wedding anniversary that hubby Leslie Nielson is straying. The Towering InfernoAstaire and Jennifer Jones's cat will have to help each other through their grief.

Anne Hathaway as Fantine in Les Misérables (2012). Though, to be fair, she had pretty legitimate reasons for being sad/forlorn. Forrest Gump Thought for sure that^ would've said 'Forrest Grump'.

I tried to find images of Van Johnson and Jack Carson with sad expressions. No luck! How's this one for Van in The Caine Mutiny ? and a pensive Jack from his Radio Days ?

I tried to find images of Van Johnson and Jack Carson with sad expressions. No luck! Yeah, I had hoped to include Carson in my group above, but the most intense displays I could find were miffed or befuddled. In the one below, which I think is from Cat On A Hot Tin Roof, you could say he looks stricken, but ol' Gooper is probably only begging or whining. 23 Paces To Baker StreetFormer fiance Vera Miles tries to shake recently-blinded playwright Van Johnson out of his morose self-pity, but it ain't workin.' In spite of that, it's a fun film; a Rear Window variation. What does the trick is his overhearing a crime plotted in a pub and, failing to convince Scotland Yard, launching his own investigation, with a little help from his friends.

I tried to find images of Van Johnson and Jack Carson with sad expressions. No luck! and a pensive Jack from his Radio Days ? That's his billing closeup from a trailer for 1943's The Hard Way.In this still from that film, he, Dennis Morgan and Ida Lupino look, well, concerned, anyway.
