I just opened an article on The Washington Post and I saw a big box on the center of the screen giving me subscription options. If I were an American I might or might not have subscribed but I find it almost ludicrous that they expect people in a different continent to pay subscription to their news articles. I can get basic news from free news agencies. May be they can have IP based filters and offer free articles to international readers.
But yeah, I can understand people in their home countries subscribing to online sites to get news/opinions. Do you subscribe to online versions of sites like The New York Times, Financial Times The Economist, The Washington Post etc?

Every now and then I’m tempted to subscribe to the Guardian.

No.
But the local newspaper only allows one to read a few articles then one must Subscribe to see more AJ
I'm tempted to do that.
But the big news papers not so much. Too many other sources of the same stories.

Our public library offers free online access to The New York Times.
