He's opted out. He apparently packed his bags and departed the team hotel without initially informing anyone of his intentions. Van Wagenen called it a "disappointing end" to Cespedes' four-year tenure with the club. At least he handled it like a consummate professional. Should be a useful negotiating point should he ever get another MLB contract... for the GM.

I thought this was common behavior from him? Being a bit of a bozo is common behavior, not going AWOL. Congrats on surfing in Nebraska. (5150 posts)

The latest.....
You know what, to hell with Yoenis Cespedes. I've been a staunch defender of this signing, but if this is true, then he's the biggest proma dinna bitch in baseball right now, even more than Trevor Bauer. The Mets have paid him over $100m the past 4 seasons, all for about 900 ABs and countless "incidents" resulting him missing huge swaths of time. Now, when you're hitting .160, OPS barely over .600, you can't run, you can't field, you're one heavy cough away from a season-ending injury, you have the balls to complain about contract bonuses?
I hate to be vindictive, but he should never step foot on a major league field ever again. That privilege should be reserved for people who actually care.

Cespedes being Cespedes. The team can not do worse without him. It opens the door for Dom Smith to get regular reps, which is a good thing. I'm all for it. So long Yo, 2015 was amazing and I'll love you forever for it, but you're a buffoon.

Are the benchmarks just prorated?

Are the benchmarks just prorated? I would assume they'd have to be, and I'd imagine the union brought that up when they were figuring out how to structure the season.

OK, so how is our friend Dom Smith doing now that he's been thrust in regular duty?
Last night, he went 2-4 with 2 doubles, a run batted in, and a run scored in the Mets 5-3 win. Since August 1, in 17 games (16 starts), Dom has slashed .328/.420/.759 (1.179 OPS) with 5 homers, 16 RBI, 10 2B and 10 runs scored. The Mets have gone 9-8 during that time, after starting the season rather sluggishly.
Of his last 18 hits, 15 have gone for extra bases. His 10 doubles lead the NL (in just 77 PA) and his .754 slugging leads all of baseball. He's also tallied 21 RBI. The Mets are still on the outside looking in, but Cespedes walking away is probably the best thing that could have happened to them at this point.
