In all seriousness do they fool most kids? My nephews played hockey and they were often given out to all teams at tournaments. One time the younger one's team came in dead last. Didn't win a game, didn't score a goal in all 4 games and were given one. He called it the "Thanks for showing up trophy."

The older one when given a medal once when his team played poorly said "We only deserve an award for best jerseys."

I was happy enough with the post-game soda pop.

Even the kids in the Special Olympics know that everyone getting participation trophies takes away the whole point of even trying to win.

Yeah but these days they have so many leagues that don't keep score and they stopped competitive sports in gym class so nobody's feelings get hurt if they lose. Participation trophies have been around for a long time but I don't think that is the main problem. It is the wussification of kids sports that is the problem. There are articles on this.

She didn't seem to realize how empty the achievement was. My husband and I were surprised. Your nephew was a little more aware than my daughter. Lol

Oh, fuck. Not this old argument again. WHO CARES? Right now no child is getting a trophy unless they survive a bout of covid. Let’s argue this when we know if and when pee-wee hockey ever returns.
Harrumph.

I don’t have a problem with younger children getting participation trophies because the whole point should be to get children off the xBox, into the sunshine, and wanting to play sports for exercise purposes if nothing else. It should be fun and not a place where Sideline Coach Daddy goes ape-shit if Junior rounds third but gets thrown out at home. Once they’re in their teens, then it can be explained what MVP really means.

Sorry, but I see it as just another bitch’n moan about one the least important things to worry about especially right now. It is possible there will be no child team sports for a very long time and maybe never.

I don't think this is fooling anybody over the age of 5.
This is so annoying to me, but I get it. Make everyone feel good. This is not good imo, it just sounds good. Children need to learn about disappointment and how to overcome that disappointment. Competitive games are an effective way to do this.

What made my nephews more proud than a 'Thanks for showing up' trophy was being given the game puck by the coach if the team voted them to be the team MVP of a game.

None of the schools my kids attended did stuff like that. I'm against it in principle of they really exist but if you parent your kids it's nothing to worry about and if you don't parent your kids then they're already frucked.

Sometimes I like what the kids did to acknowledge each other better than any awards or trophies. My younger nephew was playing at a 16 and under tournament to go to Nationals years ago and the game was a 0 0 tie until the last minute when a kid from my nephew's team scored. The other goalie gave the kid who scored the puck he shot into the net when they skated past each other and bumped gloves at the end. Then when the team did some victory laps my nephew who wore number 50 took off his Jersey, carried it like a flag skating behind his teams goalie pointing at the number to acknowledge his 50 saves.
