Participation trophies send terrible messages to kids. They say kids MUST get a reward even if they do poorly and that they've achieved something when they haven't. Playing a sport is enjoyment and reward in itself, but if a child is unhappy about losing he (or she) should be taught by parents and coaches that he needs to work harder if he wants to improve and that there are times when he's going to lose. Personally I'm so tired of seeing people get rewards for mediocrity and failure.
Kobe Bryant hated participation trophies and he taught his daughters an important lesson when they were given trophies for placing fourth in a basketball tournament. The girls knew that the trophies were meaningless and did not want to accept them. But Kobe told them to accept the trophies and then put them in a prominent place in their bedrooms. He said "Look at those trophies every day and tell yourselves that you're never going to get another one like it again."

At least kids don’t get trophies for not turning up.

I dislike the idea anyone gets one for just turning up, I think a trophy needs to be earned, even in defeat you can do this to send the right message, like ok you lost but you played your guts out that deserves an acknowledgement to reward kids for trying, but like it would be wooden and well fuck it, it would be a replica Ashes trophy to send the right message. The only people who fall for them seem to be imo people who didn't care, anyone who played to win wont be fooled by a participation trophy, people who play because their friends do or their parents forced them are the ones who like it because winning doesn't matter to them and hey look they got a shiny prize, I also think sometimes it's more to appease demented parents who kick off at kids sports because they are mentally unhinged, or desperately trying to live vicariously through their kids, so it's more a here take this and shut up award for mummy or daddy, why they just don't go and buy some cheap trophies off ebay is beyond me though.
