Bat, I think that picture you have from Butch Cassidy is actually actor Donnelly Rhodes. Sam doesnβt appear on camera. He explains it here: Sam Elliot in Butch Cassidy

I had an uncle with a one line role in Hook. He was chosen from the pool of extras to say it by Spelberg himself and even has a credit in the IMDb listing. His career did not take the direction that Sam's did, however. It was his one line in his innumerable roles as an extra ! That picture is perhaps not from Butch and Sundance but it seems to be of the period Info edited... thanks A blog about sam was the source of " The Picture" : edit: link lost .. trackers have been sent to find it

He said working with Lady Gaga on 'A Star Is Born' (2018) blew his mind like nothing he'd experienced before. Clint Eastwood was going to steer Beyonce through the story but when it didn't happen Bradley Cooper took over. Sam Elliott earned an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor. He became emotional.

Rhodes was the card player who had to decide whether to draw on Sundance or not in the opening scene. Sam Elliot was one of the other card players at the table.

The man was born to wear a mustache! Happy birthday Sam! He's still the best live action incarnation of Thunderbolt Ross in any Marvel movie.

TV movie. Was watching it and had missed the credits. Could not figure out why the guy playing Bill Bell seemed so familiar. Turned out to be Sam sans stash!

First saw Sam wa-a-a-ay back in 1970/71 in the last seasons of the Mission: Impossible classic TV series. Sam appeared in a few episodes in the roles that Martin Landau or Leonard Nimoy would have played in earlier seasons. I thought he was quite colorless. Never near a replacement for either of his predecessors. I never would have guessed that Elliott would have become the strong personality and screen presence that he became. I am very glad I was proved wrong about my first impressions oh so many years ago.

My favorite Sam Elliott film moment comes at the end credits of TOMBSTONE
The Brothers Earp plus Doc stroll down the street towards the OK Corral and destiny -- but Sam seems to be the only one who is actually IN the moment:
Bill Paxton -- looks around like he would rather be somewhere else Val Kilmer -- looks like he wants to stop at the saloon for a quick shot of rotgut first Kurt Russell -- looks like he knows he's about to walk into the history books But Sam -- he just looks really pissed! ("I'm gonna blow them Clanton mothas into kingdom come!")

Has a small part in THE CHALLENGE--where he is the US agent sent to help in the island duel between Darren McGavin and Mako (before they decide to kill anyone else who comes along to interfere with their battle). But come on now his ultimate film is FROGS!He has a great part as Pickett Smith, and good scenes with Ray Milland. I heard the other day he is married to Katherine Ross. Did they meet on Butch Cassidy or The Legacy?
His role in Ghost Rider was such a waste. One got the impression he was going to be accompanying Nicholas Cage in the final showdown but instead after the brief riding FX sequence (without the Johnny Cash song), he says "well that's all the fire I had left in me--good luck son.." and wanders off.
