And we can all see that you’re an idiot playing a semantics game... trying to deny the obvious meaning of what Rian Johnson is guilty of saying, by playing a pointless semantics game. The only one playing semantic games here is you. Putting something in quotes that a person never actually said is the very definition of a lie. You people have never had any concern for truth or accuracy. You can’t move goalposts by trying to call a paraphrase or an embellishment a lie. It still doesn’t change the fact that you were wrong. Rian Johnson did say that he wants to divide audiences by the movies he makes. And you lied when you insisted that he didn’t. Stickling over misquotes is just a pathetic attempt at a diversion away from the fact that you wrong. Rian Johnson himself has said he makes his movies intentionally divisive to moviegoing audiences. And that’s what I told you and Jan El Señor told you; but you argued against and denied. You were wrong. You are a liar in denial about it. Plain and simple.

You are literally making stuff up--he never says any of this in your source.
How people like you can even live with yourselves is a source of endless amazement to me. Yeah, this faustus5 guy is a real clown! His special talent is blind juggling of semantics. What a hoot! LOL

IT never held up in the first place. The central plot makes no sense. Everything else is filler.
ACtually, if you remove Rey and Luke from TLJ, then it kinda makes more sense to watch TLJ before TFA. Although both a re utter shite.

What about that classic Ironing scene - does that still hold up?
People can criticize Rian Johnson all they like but parodying the entire film series in the current entry that YOU are making... That's genius!

Personally i agree with leonard Maltin in his review of episode vii and episode ix. Even though i haven't seen episode ix just yet i have seen episode vii.
And since he's correct in his reviews of episode vii. I'm sure he would review episode viii and say he liked it.

I’ve never been one of those people who was outraged by the movie’s existence, but I can say that the movie has kind of gotten worse for me over time. When you get right down to it, it’s not really the original and innovative film that critics praised it as. Agreed. Lot’s of critics praised it for its “artistic boldness”. But as you point out the unexpected subversion is not really original. Most of it is canceling plots and storylines with empty answers. Exactly. The First Order chasing Leia’s battle cruiser is just like the Empire chasing the Millennium Falcon in TESB. But in TESB we get an exciting chase; full of tension, with stunt flying between Star Destroyers and through asteroid fields. In TLJ we get the same thing conceptually. But it’s a slow, boring, straight-line chase through space. (Yawn) On top of that there are some rather stupid military decisions in TLJ compared to TESB. In TESB, the Star Destroyers try to shoot down the escaping Rebel ships, but are neutralized by an ion cannon. The Empire sends ground troops to take out the Rebel base. In TLJ, Hux acts like a character out of Spaceballs, easily distracted by Poe trolling him. Meanwhile the First Order targets the base with their Star Destroyers instead of fleeing ships. And we get the dumbest ships in Star Wars yet: a fleet of Resistance bombers that fly at a snails pace, and have to be directly overtop of a stationary Star Destroyer to attack it. Moments like when Kylo offered to have Rey join him was unexpected and suggested some purpose behind it. But I agree, there are few other subversive moments like that. Many of them, like the example you give about Rey’s lineage, are just mundane empty answers played for cheap shock value. Yep. Canto Bight was a subplot that failed in its mission, in the end. And the only thing it accomplished was to give Rose and Finn something to do. Poe’s mutiny was ultimately a silly subplot in the middle of a boring space chase. A tireless argument between him and Holdo. Instead of both of them strategizing in a life or death situation, they both engage in a juvenile shouting match that seemed to be trying to teach the audience about some moral lesson in the pros and cons of man-splaning. Pad away. I had the same motivations for wanting to see Rian Johnson go in some different directions in this movie. But it seems like he got full of himself in his creative process. He made bold choices that some absolutely loved about this movie. But too often those “bold” artistic choices were about his own personal artistic satisfaction and taste. He didn’t always do what was best for the story. Or a particular character. And that’s factoring in for whatever level of subversion he was going for. Not to mention his “artistic choices” also created a lot of plot holes! And in rewatching it, those moments get more transparent. Yeah, I have to agree. This was the most the most disjointed, non-harmonious trilogy. And yeah, some of RJ’s choices about how he made TLJ are genuinely part of the problem.

To say it 'doesn't hold up all that well', is to imply it was at one time of great quality. It wasn't.

No, he didn't. Not even your ridiculous, butthurt "source" has him saying this. Look, you people can hate on the movie as much as you want. But if you had credible reasons to do so, you would never have to lie about it. What the heck are you talking about? He says it right there at the opening of the video I posted. “ Having half the people be blown away (and really like it). And having half the people walk out and say that was literally the worst movie that I’ve ever seen. Having those 2 extremes, that is what I (Rian) wants to accomplish.” That’s the opening quote from Rian Johnson. It doesn’t get any more credible than that! Either you didn’t watch the video, or you are in extreme denial about what he said. There’s really, literally no other way to interpret it! And if there is, I’d love to hear your explanation.(This should be good!) Johnson’s statement in reference to “pissing people off” (Jan's post) is not necessarily literal but possibly an attempt to provoke polarising views. That is what all artists do. Kubrick knew of the same thing when 2001 was screened. Rock Hudson famously walked out of the premiere and said, “What the heck was that?” or the people who mock Jackson Pollock and his paintings claiming they’re nothing but a mess. Despite the dramatic tone from Johnson I sense no maliciousness from the comments to anger people which is my interpretation. And evidently, Johnson is a director who has made films/ tv episodes with artistic integrity that have been well received by both audiences and critics. Overall, Johnson’s implication is not your inference.

Overall, Johnson’s implication is not your inference. Do all artists strive to provoke polarizing views as a goal? I don’t know that they do. In fact I’m sure not all do. Even Disney has done many films in their history that strived to be as little polarizing as possible. Nevertheless, few artists have chosen to describe artistic polarization as a byproduct rather than deliberate intent in such terms that sound so deliberate. And Johnson had strong cues throughout his creation of TLJ (from beginning to end) that it was divisive. But his reaction seemed to be incorrigible. So his words are still open to some measure of personal interpretation. Perhaps he chose to put it in those terms because both things are true. He is willing to make art that can become inherently polarizing because of (sometimes) unpredictable differences in audience opinion. And he is also willing to make art that is deliberately divisive.

The incompetence thing kills me, almost every major character is incompetent in TLJ, Poe, Finn, Rose, Rey, Kylo, Luke, Holdo, Hux, Snoke, only Leia and Dl Toro's characters arent utter dipshits multiple times through out the movie, when you think about it, Poe, Finn and Rose fuck up Leia's plan, because Holdo actively makes Poe her enemy for no reason, Hux is just a putz, Snoke gets killed like a bitch after making Rey look like a doofus, and Kylo makes her look dumb also by showing her nah bitch I aint a good guy im just eviller than you thought, but then Rey shows him up by escaping before he even wakes up after they both get knocked out, and Luke then makes him look like a bitch infront of his men, but Luke also looks like a dipshit with Yoda and then kills himself as a distraction, oh and Rose also prevents Finn trying to blow the super weapon thing leaving it so their base can be cracked open like a fucking egg leaving them all to die just because...if this was Spaceballs 2 I wouldn't mind sounds about right for a parody, but it's not it's meant to be a real sequel to TFA and RJ went out of his way to make every character he could look like a useless twat.
