Cecil B. DeMille mesmerized his audiences with grandeur, bold, polished and powerful, a director, with a speciality for extravagant spectacle. The Sign of the Cross (1932) is an extraordinary epic work & a significant slice of cinematic history, I think it is the most striking pre-code film of the lot. The art direction and costume design were by Mitchell Leisen, who also acted as assistant director, Karl Struss was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Cinematography. , as the stills reflect. With a blend of saintly Sunday school virtue & debauched erotic and violent excess., the film stirred up the much critical debate, leading to the 1934 formation of the Catholic Legion of Decency. Forcing the hand of Motion Picture Production Code to strictly enforce the leigon's decency standards, many scenes were cut from releases after mid 1934. In 1993 the uncut restored version of DeMille's remarkable original was reissued... DeMille on set with cinematographer Karl Struss
Debauched spectators making bets, laughing, drooling with erotic excitement at the arena entertainments, trademark DeMille Poppaea... Dacia, you're a butterfly with the sting of a wasp. Take off your clothes. Get in here and tell me all about it....
