I'm watching this wonderful movie right now and I've decided that Emma, as played by Debra Winger, is just about as close to a perfect person as I can imagine. She has a great sense of humor, a huge heart and she is utterly genuine. What you see is what you get. Also, and this puts Emma over into the realm of truly special human beings, is when she is more or less saying goodbye to her loved ones. She knows what is important and I especially love and admire how she deals with Tommy's anger and sullen demeanor and gives him full permission to never look back and feel bad because, as she says, I KNOW THAT YOU LOVE ME. Emma is one of the rare persons who can fully accept life on life's terms. She is heartbreakingly human.

If I remember correctly, when her husband cheated on her, she got angry at him, but she never confessed that she had cheated on him too.

Though I do still think Emma is wonderful. The affair she has with John Lithgow is a lot sweeter and tender and sincere than the sleazy canoodling Flap gets up to. I didn't find Flap very appealing.

They both did the same thing to their spouse. If anything, he's less bad for owning up to it.

It's not your place to tell anybody how they should feel about something.
