It seems like the film has pretty much been forgotten about at this point, but what do people think of it? I haven’t actually rewatched it since theaters, so I don’t know what I’d think of it now, but at the time, I thought it was fine. I wasn’t really invested in politics at the time, so I didn’t care for the controversy surrounding it, but I recall it being serviceable, with Bradley Cooper giving a good performance. The fake baby was pretty funny, though.

I liked it. It seemed to be a big deal when it first came out I agree. Bradley played the part really well too.

I remember liberals at the time calling it jingoistic propaganda because the director talked to a chair once, despite the movie itself being about PTSD and fairly anti-war.
It's a decent flick. Cooper's performance carries it.

Liberals always hated Eastwood’s movies. ? He's falling into the same trap as the libs. I seem to recall a lot of conservatives being pissy Clint made a WW2 movie about the Japanese POV.

Good movie, but way too long/repetitive. It’s well made though.

6/10 - Never found myself liking or admiring the main character. Nor did the craftsmanship of the film impress me. The most powerful scene was the news footage of the funeral, nothing Eastwood filmed.

It was but propagandists will find a way to politicize anything. I read a good bit about Kyle back in the day and by the worst accounts he was an asshole, by the best he was hard to get along with. He sniped from rooftops after buildings were flushed so wasn't a stalker hunter like most celebrated snipers (eg Carlos Hathcock), which also made him a bit controversal.

I liked it. Had some strong elements of PTSD, etc...
That being said I like Hacksaw Ridge better.

That was part of the conversation, but the average critic or columnist isn't a Chris Kyle historian and a lot of the negativity I saw didn't even go into that. Most just called the movie pro-war, jingoistic, propagandist, and racist on its own merits...or at least the merits of being directed by Clint Eastwood. Several of the articles I read were less about the movie and more reviews of Clint's RNC appearance. Seth Rogen compared it to the fake Goebbels movie in Inglorious Basterds... the former a movie mainly about PTSD and how its tearing a man away from his family. I don't know. It wouldn't be the first movie to portray a guy as better than he was in reality, but no one's bitching about Captain Phillips glossing over Phillips' role in what happened.

Well you are learning that critics are just average turds with English degrees. I watched the movie and remember nothing. I remember more from various articles. And knowing Eastwood, it probably was a jingoistic mess like Hacksaw Ridge. I grew up watching Eastwood and John Wayne with dad, I'm not against a little jingoism now and again it doesn't make something above criticism.

That's because everyone knows that a fictional retelling won't be 100% true. It all depends on how it's done and how it affects the narrative. AMERICAN SNIPER's plot is entirely about a political subject, so of course critics will focus on that aspect. Also:
