Any fans of "The Exorcist III"? How has it held up after 30 years? Some people find it to be an underrated film. Most people find it to be the only Exorcist film outside of the original to be worthy of the Exorcist name. If you're a film buff, you're probably aware of the studio-mandated changes and inclusions this movie had to have when it was released. It's a decent film that is well-acted thanks to George C. Scott and definitely Brad Dourif in particular.
Maltin Movie Guide Review: The Exorcist III (1990) - 2 out of 4 stars"Police inspector Scott is confronted by a series of gruesome murders, unmistakably the work of a serial killer who was executed the same night as the exorcism of the original movie. Film begins well but grows more absurd and confusing until it self-destructs. Shows strong evidence of post-production tinkering."

Very different film from the original, but I like it a lot and I think it's extremely underrated. And Brad Dourif's performance is pretty terrifying.
Incidentally most people cite the infamous jump scare as the film's scariest moment, and it is a great scare but I thought the bit in the priest's confessional towards the beginning was worse.

I gave it a 6/10 but I really need to see it again. I hear the Directors Cut is excellent.

I think The Ninth Configuration is Blatty's best film on the subject of faith--have to wonder how the Exorcist would have been with Scott as Kinderman--it wouldn't have happened of course-he would have had to have a much bigger role.
There's a couple of scenes with Dourif that are creepy effective--but the REAL star is the jump scare. People told me about it and when I finally watched it, I was waiting.
The glass was a nice red herring because it did lower my guard for the real one.

I didn't think much of it when I first saw it in the theater, but after re-evalution with repeat viewings I came to respect it better. Not as good as the original, but it certainly is effectively creepy. And of course, that legendary jump scare...the stuff that nightmares are made of.

I attempted to watch that recently, I couldn't sit through it. I have no idea why it's so well-regarded. If you get into it, it builds up in an interesting way with the characters, especially Stacy Keach. But I can understand why someone would not appreciate it, especially the first half.
But compared to modern movies, having one with interesting philosophical discussion seems kind of refreshing. They shouldn't have used that song at the start though--because Rolling Thunder had used it.

It knocks spots off the risibly bad second and because it was written and directed by Blatty himself, many consider it to be the real sequel to the The Exorcist. Having said that, Blatty's vision for the film was very different from what was eventually released as Exorcist III - originally called Legion it didn't contain any exorcisms for a start with one having to be artificially tacked on at the end by the studio so they could put the word Exorcist in the title, but despite this, it does have it's moments as an effective chiller. Film critic Mark Kermode, who's a fan, considers the nurse in the corridor scene to be the best jump scare in the history of cinema.

A very well done film based on an even better book.
The main problem with the film for me was the changed ending that got way too goofy.
