Even though we remember the 80s being the decade of the slasher, it wasn't the most common horror genre of the decade. Going by memory it was vampires. I think slashers came in 3rd or 4th.
In general the 70s has better films and bands, you had to have talent then. It started to change in the 80s although there was still a lot of talent around.

Of what I've seen, 1970s horror seems to be rawer and more unsettling. By the mid-1980s, things got more goofy.

Apples and oranges in a way. 70s horror tended to be meditative, atmospheric, and disturbing. 80s horror was largely fun and campy with more emphasis on FX. Ultimately I'd go 70s. Yup. I have no real preference between the two decades, but one thing that has always stood out for me is the fact that the great 70s horrors all tend to be very sombre and meditative in their approach compared to the 80s greats. For example, the best slasher flicks of the 70s would be dread-inducing movies such as Black Christmas, Alice, Sweet Alice and Halloween. Their 80s counterparts would be creepy but more whimsical fare such as A Nightmare on Elm Street, Friday the 13th Part VI and Child's Play. The 70s had an edginess to them which the 80s replaced with camp. It's all good to me though.

According to Wikipedia there are less than 50 vampire movies from the 1980's and more than 100 slasher movies.

Did you figure out there are more than five years in a decade, LOL. Where did you find the info on Wikipedia, I've never looked up movie information there before. My information comes from a thread back in IMDB's horror forum where people counted up horror movies of various genres of the 80s.

I edited because I figured I would get straight to the point and try not to sound rude. The reason I only mentioned the first half of the decade is because that is when the bulk of them were released. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:1980s_slasher_filmsen.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_vampire_films

Probably 1980s horror.
Even though I love horror films from the 1970s, I think that horror films in the 1980s kicked it up a notch in the genre.
