In the first 5-10 years of "Titanic" (1997) existence, this film was OVERRATED!
It won 11 Academy Awards. It was the first Epic/Romantic Old Hollywood Style set/classic type film in probably 30 years at the time. So the OSCARS went overboard.
It grossed over 2B World Wide when tickets were about 5 dollars per ticket and no 3D, IMAX, or IMAX 3D...
It was regarded as one of the greatest films of all time by fans and critics.
(2007-2017) Then, in the past 10 years (The Dark Knight Era) when films became gritty, grounded, convoluted, and dark with twists and turns. People began to turn on the film.
Now a lot of people mock the movie and talk about how terrible it is, it's an expensive Lifetime film, too melodrama, etc... Now it's UNDERRATED...
Look, it's not "Casablanca" or "Citizen Kane" but it deserves more credit than it gets today. People went overboard with it initially, but it is a great film. Look at the sets, not 100% CGi, look at the acting, Kate Winslet is amazing. The costumes, music, story, it's really a great film.
It's time to put it where it deserves to be, a solid classic, not top 100, but not an expensive Lifetime film either. 8/10.
Thoughts?

I also rate it 8/10 and think the movie is currently underrated.
As to it being overrated 20 years ago, I do feel the love story aspect of the movie was overrated. The reenactment of the Titanic sinking, on the other hand, was brilliant and never overrated. Just my opinion.

I would say from the Dinner Party sequence where Jack has to wear a suit and act in front of the Rich people (and the Mom, Cal mock him) forward, it's a 10/10. Up to that part, it's a 6/10.

I agree for the most part. For me, from the moment they spot the iceberg onward is the best part of the movie.

Titanic is Cameron filmmaking at its finest. Visually amazing, superbly crafted, extremely solid in every respect.
...and also pretty simplistic and formulaic, with a healthy dose of emotional manipulation. Look at how he treats Rose's fiance, for instance. We must forgive Rose for cheating on her fiance, because god forbid there should ever be any ambiguity in any of the characters in this movie. And so virtually every single thing the man says or does is stupid and loathsome. "God himself couldn't sink that ship!", "Oh, this Picasso, he won't amount to anything!", "Oh Jack, you almost look like a gentleman!" And so on.
I'm not saying it's bad and wrong... just that it's a shame that the movie has all the subtlety of a brick in the face.

Then, in the past 10 years (The Dark Knight Era) when films became gritty, grounded, convoluted, and dark with twists and turns. People began to turn on the film. As a hardcore Titanic fan and follower, this isn't entirely accurate. Hype backlash for the film set in pretty damn quickly. People got sick of it, really sick of the song, and Leo was arguably written off as a pretty boy until reproving himself with Scorsese. In fact, I'd say Titanic has finally settled (no pun intended) in the public conscious. I remember in 2006, the IMDb rating was at 7.2. In that short amount of time, it has risen to 7.7. Guys aren't jealous of Leo anymore, and Titanic's been replaced by other pop culture romance phenomenons to hate (and which actually deserve it).

When I compiled my top 50 a few years ago now, I landed Titanic at #46. My criteria was hybrid favs & greatests... Titanic was JC's technical tour de force + it was one of the more memorable theatrical experiences. It re-plays quite well every year or so. I went to see the 3D re-release, & it was great. A- from me, while I don't love the movie, its faults don't take much away either - Zane's energy merely masks what someone from that era might've acted like in real life. We're supposed to hate him & we do, job done. The fact that it paints one of modern history's most famous events with dignity & awe keeps it going for me.

i don't like it. Frightfully soppy story, and the way Rose strolls about the ship without a chaperone going into third class and having se xwith jack etc is just ridiculous. No upper class girl would have been allowed to behave like that in 1912. it's quite ludicrous. And the villain is way over the top, h might as well be wearing a hat with 'villain' on it. if they weren't on a ship he'd have been tying Rose to the railway lines.

My fourth favorite film from Cameron after the two Terminators and Aliens. I've always enjoyed the film and still do even with all the flack it's gotten in recent years. I'm not saying it's some flawless masterpiece, but it is well-crafted and entertaining it's great that Cameron put emphasis on the story and characters as much as the disaster of the ship.

A technical triumph marred by a sub par script...The dialogue is laughably bad in some of the sequences.....The acting is fine...they did what they could with the material...

It's a 7/10 for me. Technically it's a well made film despite the chichés. But I'll say that the film is gripping after the ship hits the iceberg.

As others have mentioned, it's technically accomplished but the script is a mess of sappy cliches and one-dimensional characters, 4/10
