The story: The Marquis de Rays scammed several hundred Italians around 1879 to start a colony on a paradise island off New Guinea. They were dumped in a swamp and after 6 months the survivors were rescued and taken to Sydney. Many were given land grants in my district, beginning an Italian tradition here.
The movie: deals only with the recruitment around northern Italy and the settlement and privations in the swampy jungle of the western Pacific tropics, ending with their rescue.
I saw the movie, which was in colour on TV in the 1980s. I think maybe I havent found it because it could be a Spanish or French film from the 1960s or 1970s. It is possibly not a direct storytelling but inspired by Marquis de Rays exploits because I havent been able to get any hits from searching for the Marquis de Rays.
Any ideas?

I'm drawing a blank right now, but I'll start looking when I get the time.

I'm drawing a blank right now, but I'll start looking when I get the time. I looked fairly thoroughly through English language movies, and (I think) Italian movies. I suspect it was made somewhere else in Europe. It is even possible that the Marquis de Rays disappeared from the script along with some other plot elements to make it unrecognisable. The only things I can really remember is that it was in colour, set in the 19th C and had bunches of European settlers dumped in a a swamp where many died from pestilence and starvation before a ship came to rescue them.
