They are toasted sandwiches made in either a jaffle iron or a sandwich press.

Hi, Goz
I'm not familiar with the term "jaffle," but such sandwich press/cookers are sold here. Actually, the only time I've had one (that I recall), was in London, when I stopped in at a pub, for lunch.
It was a ham and cheese, with a pickle relish. The shape and texture were a bit different from what I'm used to. But, the flavor was fine.

I know a lot of people use a panini press. I have one of these for grilled cheese sandwiches, but it's not great, so rarely use it. Had a better one but broke it.

When we were kids Mum had one of those 'jaffle irons' and we used to use it over the BBQ or fire. Yum. You know how vacuum cleaners became known as 'Hoovers' after the manufacturer name, well in Australia we have a company that scpecialised in eelctric jaffle makers, and we used to have Breville parties where we made and ate jaffles. Again Yum. You can put almost anything in them, however I liked when you put a slice of cheese in either side of the inside of the bread and filled it with ham tomato or cheese avocado and mayo or pretty anything much else yummy.

That brings back memories of sitting around the campfire and making cherry pies (bread buttered on the outside, cherry pie filling on the inside).

Those look good Goz. I used to have a panini press but only used it once - I was just too lazy to drag it out.

I used to make them before mine broke years ago. It was good because it crimps the edges together and stops the hot filling (e.g. baked beans) from dropping out the side.

There's not much can't be done with a decent sandwich toaster.
