I read a short piece that he wrote about Ari Aster and Hereditary, as well as Midsommar. He obviously has an appreciation for new and original voices in any genre. I'm not sure what this was or when this Film at Lincoln Center program took place but I'd certainly be curious to see the rest of it.

I assumed there would be a response like this when I wrote that. I don't necessarily agree with him, but it's true to some degree that those voices are not really original.

The thing is that Marty was never clear enough on whether he was criticizing the superhero genre or just the M.C.U.

The thing is that Marty was never clear enough on whether he was criticizing the superhero genre or just the M.C.U. I got the sense that he was using Marvel to talk about super hero movies in general, but also big budget action set piece movies. So I think he'd lump stuff like Avatar or Star Wars or Mission: Impossible or Transformers or whatever else into that. He approached the criticism by saying these films are more like theme park rides than cinema in the sense that those movies that value the special effects and action set pieces over character and emotion... which I think is not true, particularly with Marvel, but I appreciate his grumpy old man stance all the same.
