I've heard that the: "Black Hope Cemetery" case... unsolvedmysteries.fandom.com/wiki/Black_Hope At least partially, inspired the movie: "Poltergeist" (1982)Yes, homes were in fact built on top of un-relocated graves, and there were also reports of hauntings because of it. However... The movie, "Poltergeist", came out in 1982... and the story was probably conceived of, a year or two before that... Which creates a "which came first", problem... It may be possible that someone knew about "Black Hope Cemetery" years earlier, and that information was 'leaked' to someone who was working on the movie, before the "Black Hope Cemetery" situation became widely public... If it didn't, then wow... Talk about being "stranger than fiction"... And what a strange coincidence, that the movie came out at the exact same time that the "Black Hope Cemetery" case was becoming public...

This is common knowledge among horror fans, but the Ed Gein case inspired these horror movies:
Psycho The Texas Chainsaw Massacre The Silence Of The Lambs

Zodiac stands out, never solved. Summer of Sam, BTK etc, terrifying but solved. The Bundy film. All real.
Tough genre. Capote is a great watch, great cast, true story.

The Winchester Mystery House has inspired many similar ideas and films... Including:
Stephen King's "Rose Red" (2002) (miniseries)
Winchester (2018)

Little Heidi Wyrick grew up with some unique friends... Apparently, they were the ghosts of people who had lived and then died in the neighborhood, years earlier. Her story was featured on Documentary/Reality TV Shows, such as: "Unsolved Mysteries" (1994): unsolvedmysteries.fandom.com/wiki/Wyrick_Houseand "A Haunting": "A Haunting in Georgia" (2002): en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_A_Haunting_episodes#Specials_(2002)In 2013, Her story was featured in the film: "The Haunting in Connecticut 2: Ghosts of Georgia" (2013)... en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Haunting_in_Connecticut_2:_Ghosts_of_GeorgiaHowever, this movie seems to be more "based on her story", as it bears little resemblance to the more fact based events depicted in the Documentary/Reality TV Shows listed above, and may have fell victim to the typical Hollywood re-imaging trend, which alters factual narratives in hopes of selling more tickets. I recommend that you watch the TV Show episodes, instead...

Not really a Horror Story, but I think it deserves and honorable mention...
The Travis Walton UFO Abduction Case:
In 1975, A logging crew claimed that they saw Travis Walton abducted by a UFO... Travis Walton was missing for FIVE days, and during that time, the community thought the logging crew had murdered Travis Walton...
When Travis Walton was found alive, he also claimed that he was abducted by a UFO.
Travis Walton' story was made into a feature film: "Fire in the Sky" (1993)...
For the most part, the film remained true to the actual events that happened... However, those working on the film, found the claims made by Travis Walton, concerning to what happened to him while he was aboard the UFO, to be boring, and created a completely fictional narrative for that part of the film.
However, every time I see that needle coming toward Travis Walton to stab him in the eye, and hearing him scream out of fear concerning what's about to happen to him... Well, it scares the hell out me!
And the abduction event at the beginning of the film, isn't exactly 'fun' to watch, either...

In 2013, Her story was featured in the film: "The Haunting in Connecticut 2: Ghosts of Georgia" (2013)... What the dumber title? A Haunting in Connecticut 2: Ghosts of Georgia or The Last Exorcism 2?

The Changeling (1980) was based on a real life haunting

Avoiding the myriad murder cases that have inspired movies, I'll offer THE ENTITY - apparently based on the real life case of Doris Bither, who in the 1970s was allegedly the victim of recurring sexual assaults at the hands of a supernatural force. The films director however, does not consider it a horror movie.
I suppose THE AMITYVILLE HORROR must get a mention too as it's among the most famous cases to inspire a movie.
THE EXORCIST also has it's roots in an alleged true case.
THE CONJURING 2 is a fictionalisation of the famous Enfield haunting.
THE VAMPIRE LOVERS (and numerous other movies) was inspired by the true life blood countess Elizabeth Bathory.
