The crime comedy 'Dirty O'Neil' is directed by Leon Capetanos and horror filmmaker Lewis Teague. Teague was a staff editor for Roger Corman at the time, working alongside Allan Arkush and Joe Dante in the editing department.
Capetanos made a film I've not seen that was released the same year, 'The Backpack Girls' (1974), which used a winged hot dog for its advertising campaign and the song 'Star Spangeled Traveling Man' on its soundtrack. Hopefully this movie will be released on dvd. Teague edited this movie.
In 'Dirty O'Neil', the main character Jimmy O'Neill (played by Morgan Paull) is a lot like police cadet Carey Mahoney (played by Steve Guttenberg). Art Metrano plays lower-league loverman Lassiter and would go on to play Lieutenant Mauser in the 'Police Academy' series, a nasty cop like Lieutenant Harris (G.W. Bailey) and Sergeant Proctor (Lance Kinsey). Another influence on the 'Police Academy' series was James Hong's comedy 'Teen Lust' (1978) which was later retitled 'Police Girls Academy'.
