'Scrooge' as it's titled in the UK yes? Alastair Sim with one of the most quintessential actor-as-character turns ever.
A+ for me, I didn't overlook holiday fare from my top 50 listing.

7/10 - The 1970 version with Albert Finney is still my favorite.

This is going to sound weird coming from a young man, but I wish A CHRISTMAS CAROL 1938 had been longer, because the plot was too rushed. Script writer Hugo Butler added a new unnecessary subplot that wastes time. Luckily, Reginald Owen's performance is very good. 7/10 As the title character in SCROOGE, Albert Finney's performance is too over-the-top. The pacing is very bad and, except for THANK YOU VERY MUCH (which is a guilty pleasure at best), none of the songs are memorable. I mean, come on! The lyrics are so basic! 4/10 SCROOGED 3/10 A CHRISTMAS CAROL 2004 5/10 GHOSTS OF GIRLFRIENDS PAST 3/10 A CHRISTMAS CAROL 2009 5/10 IT'S CHRISTMAS, CAROL! is the worst of the adaptations. Not just because it's boring, but because I actually agreed with CAROL (who represents SCROOGE) on some things. At times she's a cold-hearted bitch, but at other times she's just a business woman who thinks about profits before dreams. I thought that Emmanuelle Vaugier would be a star by now. Putting it in perspective, I realized that I thought of that because I've seen her in many shows and movies; not because of her talent. I'm not saying she doesn't have any; just that it wasn't my focus. I don't remember her past roles enough to judge them but, here, her performance is bad. She tries to be a grumpy woman, but she comes off as someone who pretends to be mean out of boredom. When her mom tells her about how she dreamed about the future, CAROL completes her sentence, revealing that she had seen it. However, her mom didn't notice it. Maybe she is a bad mother after all. When CAROL tries to remember the title of A CHRISTMAS CAROL, EVE starts to name Christmas movies. At one point, she mentions STAR WARS, which is an in-joke (EVE is played by Carrie Fisher). Ummm... It would've made more sense if she had said THE STAR WARS HOLIDAY SPECIAL. Oh, I forgot. Nobody wants to acknowledge its existence. 1/10 ------------------------------------- You can read comments of other movies in my blog.

Just out of curiosity, why rating Christmas story in the middle of summer?

Just out of curiosity, why rating Christmas story in the middle of summer? I'm working through the S's in my watch list and we don't celebrate Christmas so it makes no difference when i watch a Christmas film

I'm a big fan of A Christmas Carol and have seen most if not all the versions set in the traditional Dickens time period including numerous cartoon versions. The !951 version is my favorite and IMO the benchmark version. Alatair Sim is Scrooge and Christmas isn't Christmas until I watch this holiday perfection.
