He was probably opposed to the Satan worship and killing of babies and goats and what not that was required to make the magic work. Today's audiences are much more open to killing babies than back then so it makes sense that some of you are cool with it.

Have you seen his mother??? god she was more uptight than a librarian!!!!!!!! I couldn't stand that cantankerous old cow! god, she was so slappable. 'emmmm... Samantha... ' and she wouldn't even open her mouth! and making her daughter in law call her mrs stephens??? who is she Queen Victoria???
I always liked York rather Sargent, york was more likable and actually more easygoing.
The only thing I disliked about Darren was how in the beginning he would insist she drop the witchcraft. I am glad that didn't stick.

This sounds like a subject for another board. This show had no major effect on MY life. Bwhaaa, Bwhaaaa, praise Satan!!! (jk, BTW).
ps...you ought to watch the new show "Preacher", if you really want to get your panties in a wad!

I agree. Darren could be kind of bossy at times. I don't think he was as bossy as Ricky was in I Love Lucy. I think he just wanted them to live a normal life. Her witchcraft probably just scared him and he wanted them to live as normal a life as possible. I can understand him not wanting anyone else to know about her powers since most people wouldn't understand that. I agree. He shouldn't have ordered her to not use her powers. Her being a witch is just who is. She usually used her powers at times regardless what he thought. Darren should have at least been ok with Samantha using her powers in private. I don't think Samantha was afraid of Darren's temper. I think she just wanted to keep the peace. I am not sure what she could do besides be a housewife in the mortal world. Since she was a witch, she never worked before. I am sure she could learn to do something, but it wouldn't be easy since she was use to just twitching her nose to get whatever she wanted before she met Darren. She probably felt that being a housewife was easiest mortal role she could have. Back then and in some families these days, if the husband makes decent money, the wife usually stays home. I agree. A married woman should work if she wants to. Samantha chose to be a housewife and seemed happy being a housewife. A woman should not be made to feel ashamed for being a housewife if that is what she wants to do. I also agree that it was funny when Endora turned Darren into different things and called him different names. I can understand Darren not liking being turned into different things by Endora, but he should have lightened up and accepted the fact that Samantha would use her powers at times in private. Samantha did choose to live the life of a mortal and did seem happy for the most part.

I agree, jrdmin.
One of Darren's main problems is that he kowtows to easily to his sleazy boss Larry Tate.
Reminds me of Dagwood Bumstead, who kisses the ass of his tyrannical boss Dithers. I can't understand it; Blondie owns an enormously successful catering business and probably nets twice as much money as her husband. Under those circumstances, Dagwood could have easily have left that SOB and maybe done some free-lance work at home. But, no--he remains with Dithers and meekly subjects himself to abuse! Male pride, I bet. Well, at least Dithers doesn't kick Dagwood in the butt any more. That is probably due to a storm of public protest from the fans of this classic comic strip.

It was a fun show. That both Bewitched and I Dream Of Jeannie made their fantastic, super-powerful female fantasy figures come across a normal, or as normal as they could be under the circumstances was a huge part of their appeal. It's like these were nothing much more than very peculiar relationships; and yet both shows pulled it off.

I know I signed the petitions and made the bus trip to picket the artist's and publisher's offices!

Even as a kid, I always thought it was stupid that Darrin didn't want her to use her powers, (the same for "I Dream of Jeanie"). Later on, I figured that it was dumb male pride and insecurity that the men didn't want the women to provide what they couldn't deliver. Kind of "cave-mannish", really. You hit the nail right on the head. But interestingly, both Tony Nelson and Darren were not above using their significant other's magical powers, if they'd gotten themselves into a jam. This is true...but it backfired on Darrin once or twice. There is one or two episodes where he would be arguing with Samantha about using her powers only to find himself in a bind and she let him have it...by not using her powers. The show had it's brilliant moments. I'm a diehard fan of Bewitched...forever.

Darren 'allowing' Sam to use her powers when it was to his benefit was part of the joke, IMO. He's the average mortal. Not a bad person by any means, but something of a hypocrite and, as is often the case, totally unaware of his own hypocrisy; I get the feeling Endora made it something of a project to show this up to both him and Sam.

While this is a very good series, there is only one thing that doesn't make it great: the character of Darren Stephens! To me, he was the most chauvinistic, self-centered boob since Ricky Ricardo! It infuriates me that Darren forbids Sam to use her powers, even to help him. And Sam really seems to be afraid of his temper, just as Lucy was afraid of Ricky's; she believes her role is to be the "dutiful, obedient wife", with no life outside of housework, child care, and obedience to the "lord and master". I really like when Endora turns him into a frog, or something. Endora was meant to be the meddling MIL, but it's easy to see that she was only trying to make Sam see the exciting, constructive life she passed over by marrying "the mortal". I'm looking forward to seeing the episode where Darren learns that his baby Tabitha is also a witch. This same criticism could be levied at I DREAM OF JEANNIE, I suppose, but I dislike that show because Jeannie is portrayed as a ditsy airhead, while Sam was an intelligent woman. I have to preface by saying I haven't seen much of this series beyond the black and white episodes of the first two seasons, which I loved so much I bought them.
I actually love how Sam is so devoted to Darren that she will try to give up her powers and become an ordinary housewife, and there is nothing wrong with that. That makes her a remarkable woman, especially by today's standards.
She could have literally anyone or anything she wants. And she chose him. She clearly loves him and wants to spend her life with him.
She is a loving, caring, supportive wife who wants only to make her husband happy. What is so wrong with that? It makes her happy. And selfless. Clearly, she is not a liberal.
Most men (and women) would take full advantage of Sam and her powers.
He didn't. That makes him a remarkable man.
He wants to work and make his own way in the world without any magic.
You can call it old fashioned, for sure, but today especially that kind of old fashioned thinking is a breath of fresh air in light of seeing someone like Megan Rapinoe.

Compare this show (and others from the 1960s and 1970s) to what's offered now , and you can see how horrible today's shows are. The scripts, the acting, the attention to details on wardrobe and settings...it seems writers and producers just don't care any longer. It's a shame.

If this show was ever rebooted, Gladys Kravitz would be served with a restraining order, and maybe be imprisoned for trespassing and stalking. Bet Abner would be happy about that!
