Do you know of any movie scenes that were only shot for a movie due to studio interference?
For example:
The driving through the mountains ending - Blade Runner
The exorcism - Exorcist 3
Inside the ship scene - Close Encounters of the Third Kind

The ending of the Shawshank Redemption, with Morgan Freeman's character meeting Tim Robbins's character on the beach in Mexico. The director, Frank Darabont, wanted to end the movie as the novella on which it's based ended, with Red (Freeman's character) setting out to Mexico HOPING to find his friend, but with some ambiguity over whether or not he actually does.

Was the ending of Major League studio-mandated or was that a voluntary thing? I think the original (scrapped) ending was far better.

The original ending of Detour (1945) had a character getting away with a crime, but the studio, probably under PCA pressure, had him stopped by a police car.

I want to say the "slasher" ending to Fatal Attraction, but I believe that ending was chosen because of test audiences.

It looks like the state trooper just wants to help get off the road rather than arrest him. The narration indicated the man was fairly certain of being caught one day, but, yes, he's not led away in cuffs.

The death of the principal in Scream was demanded by the studio since there was no other death from the beginning to the climax then
