Was going to make it a poll but there's been 145 cast members.
Mine vote, Eddie Murphy. Tough to go against the "originals", Chevy Chase, Dan Ackroyd, John Belushi. But Murphy was a god on SNL. Mr. Robertson's Neighborhood, Gumby etc. And I didn't like buckwheat (got old quick).
Greatest recurring character? Emily Litella. You tune in the first time and you would think Gilda Radner was an old deaf woman. "What all this fuss about presidential erections?" Soviet Jewelry. Youth in Asia (say it in your head).

Eddie Murphy is certainly up there in my estimation. I might go with Dana Carvey or Phil Hartman instead, though.

As far as SNL only, Eddie Murphy and John Belushi
Belushi made the show relevant to begin with and Murphy literally saved it from being cancelled single handedly.
As far as after SNL career, I’d say Bill Murray.

Nothing is ever like your first time. The first season was amazing. You weren't cool if you came to school on Monday and didn't know what happened on SNL. You were always arguing Belushi vs Ackroyd vs Chase (I was Team Chevy). And, looking back, the 1st season wasn't all that great. The musical guests weren't cool (Desi Arnaz?) and the Muppets were painfully out of place. Then Chevy Chase quit. But they scored getting Bill Murray, putting Jane Curtin on Weekend Update and getting better musical guests. Then everyone tapped out with the unmitigated disaster of Season 6. Honestly, what show could have kept up with losing that much talent. Like someone said, Murphy saved SNL. Is it as good now as then, no. but I still watch. You never know when the next Bill Murray, Dana Carvey or Tine Fey will appear.

Best original cast member: Gilda Radner.
Best all-time cast member: Eddie Murphy, because the show wouldn't have been around after the first cast left if he hadn't kept it going.

I like to pick people who just defined SNL.
1970's - John Belushi 1980's - Eddie Murphy 1990's - Chris Farley 2000's - Will Ferrell 2010's - Kristen Wiig, Kate McKinnon

I'm partial to Chris Farley. He could make me cry with laughter.
