a well made, gripping conspiracy thriller, released at a time when these types of conspiracy/political thriller were all the rage. A strong lead performance from Warren Beatty who creates a character we like and want to see succeed. The movie however has a downer ending where Beatty realizes he is simply being set up as a fall guy by Parallax and is shot and killed while the evil corporation escapes without being exposed, which could leave many viewers feeling unsatisfied

Underrated conspiracy thriller. I always liked it, but it doesn’t get talked about much. Yeah, I thought the ending was a downer too. But a lot of movies in the early to mid 70s had downer endings like that.

movie can be streamed on Amazon Prime if one wants to watch it. There is no Blu ray release for some reason

also one has to laugh at a scene where Beatty is able to board a plane the same way one would board a bus and is able to pay for the ticket in the plane with cash!

I hated it, personally.
I think it's one of the lamer conspiracy thrillers of the time. Just watch Three Days of the Condor instead.

I liked it - 7/10. Post-Vietnam/Watergate mistrust. Yes, back then, you could simply walk on to planes, usually shuttles, and pay while in your seat. Ever notice that one character seems to be intended to remind us of would-be assassin Arthur Bremer?

Though not as thought provoking as The Conversation, it is more entertaining. You got a nice bar fight, a chimp playing Pong, Beatty (with his untamed hair) cleverly messaging there is a bomb on the plane. A big selling point here is the widescreen photography from Gordon Willis (Manhattan, The Godfather).

Criterion is releasing this film on blu next month I believe. I’m sure it’ll be the definitive presentation on physical media.
I’ve enjoyed this one a lot over the years. The scene at the dam is very good in particular. I do think out of Pakulas 3 paranoia films it’s probably the weakest but it’s still well done.

Just finished watching the Criterion blu-ray of The Parallax View. Amazing transfer, great picture quality. But of course I would expect nothing less from Criterion.
Imagine a world that has this secret organization specializing in assassination, and will also stop at absolutely nothing in covering up what they believe are loose ends. This includes murdering innocent people they suspect might know something, making the deaths look like accidents. It's a cold-hearted, evil, dehumanizing concept that is frightening and remarkably played out here. Director Alan J. Pakula beautifully captures this sense dread, and the result is dark, moody, and mysterious. The dark anamorphic cinematography by Gordon blends in well with this feeling, and also helps give plenty of space for those scenes shot at great distances; this really sets the tone of paranoia and alienation.
Pakula presents this vision of American society in which average everyday people are unaware of what they perceive to be as normalcy is actually something else entirely. The idea is that underneath the facade of cheery flag-waving patriotism and rooting for idealistic political candidates hoping to bring major change, there lurks unknown dark forces who have the power to keep things status quo.
Not everything is spelled out clearly in The Parallex View, as there is some ambiguity. But the idea is to really make you think and draw your own conclusions on certain elements that are open to interpretation.

Very good movie. The people who seem to not like it are upset at the extremely downbeat ending . For a poor 70s paranoid thriller, try The Domino Principle.

Just saw it for the first time and thought it was okay. I liked Three Days of the Condor and Day of the Jackal better.
