In German, with English subtitles, this is an eerie, haunting film, and still a classic.
The premier song, of course, is MACK THE KNIFE, and most of us are familiar with Bobby Darin's light hearted version of it. Darin's version is a glorification of the criminal, a legend.
'
The film version of the song is the introduction of the main character, Mack, and it's totally the opposite of Darin's version. Mack is a homicidal maniac whose calm manner is all to realistic of such demon possessed monsters.
The opening song is chilling, and awesome. As good as Darin's version is, the original film version in German just totally blows Darin's version away. The theatrics in the voice and movement of the singer make for one of the great "videos" of film History.
There are two interpretations of Mack. Most popular is the Darin glorification of the legend that makes the public accept him as a wronged individual, who is innocent of the bloodthirsty murders. It's this glorification that lets the satanic side of us hold onto the glorification and "rationalization" that later makes legends of homicidal maniacs. Already, Che is idolized by the ignorant masses. Billy the Kid, Geronimo, Frank James. In time, the same will be for Manson, Bundy, and others. All "misunderstood underdogs" according to the rewrites of the possessed.
The more credible version is the one that Mack is a monster. He snake oils his way through this story, and is enabled by other monsters. In the end, a trio of "monsters" become a triad of power that rules over others. tarr
One may equate these characters to Republicans or to Democrats, but more aptly to both, as well as the other estates that help in the evil.
The music is mostly eerie and chilling "horror" style music. And it is effective. Jenny's song about ships and cannons sticks out, as does the song about "tartars" in which there is a glorification of the killing in war.
This is a movie that should be rated R, because it takes an adult mind to understand the message. For a teenager, it would send the wrong message. This is what "R" should be a rating for, something that takes experience and savvy to comprehend.
