a nightmare?
I'd say Carnival of Souls (1962) comes pretty close to accomplishing this.

Would Eraserhead be a cliched answer? Well it's the answer I think everyone would expect.

speaking of Fire in the Sky there is a miniseries called Intruders (1992) starring Richard Crenna which came out a year before that has the same screenwriter also about alien abduction. The miniseries manages to evoke this nightmarish feel for several scenes

a nightmare? I'd say Carnival of Souls (1962) comes pretty close to accomplishing this. "Carnival of Souls" has a good, nightmarish quality to it. I like that movie. I've only seen parts of "The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari", but from what I remember and judging by the stills, I'd call the movie pretty nightmarish. Also, Dario Argento's "Phenomena". I love that movie, very dreamlike.

Scream and Scream Again 1970
has a series of sequences where a guy wakes up in a hospital bed and each time he does, a limb is missing.

Only way to watch it is uploads on YouTube. Too bad. The director is Dan Curtis who seems to be well known in the horror and miniseries word
