Boxing? That one gave us Rocky, Raging Bull, The boxer, Cinderella Man, Million Dollar Baby, and The Fighter. You could probably also throw in baseball (Field of Dreams, The Sand Lot, Bad News Bears)

I don't know if it's the best, but the baseball ones aren't too bad - Major League, Bad News Bears, The Natural, Pride of the Yankees, etc.

Boxing and Baseball usually because they are character driven dramas. They are less team sports and therefore not bogged down with extra players, and subplots for characters you don’t care about.
That’s why Rudy is the only football movie on a high level is because it’s about the man more than the Notre Dame football.
Also, I think golf could make some great sports movies if you had the right script and director/actor. I do love “Tin Cup”.

Boxing (easy winner)
Baseball (easy runner-up)

Incidently "Happy Gilmore" is one of the few Adam Sandler films I actually like

The consensus across the board seems to be boxing and baseball, but now I’m curious about how many good MMA films there are.

You'd think when MMA started becoming popular during the 2000s we would have an MMA film along the same cultural impact as Raging Bull or Rocky, or even Million Dollar Baby, but so far nothing.

Baseball
Character driven story with a sport that is relatively easy to follow even if you are not a fan of the game PLUS the excitement of the game itself .... and not violent !
Instant think of a title favs :
Field of Dreams A League of Their Own The Natural Bull Durham

Boxing movies are the most overrated genre in the whole of film. If you've seen 1 youve seen them all. Same story of the underdog overcoming personal problems to beat the big bad evil boxer at the end with a montage in the middle. I will never watch another boxing movie ever again.

Kingpins is underrated. Big Lebowski is sort of a bowling film.
