Soccer and cricket are the most popular sports worldwide. Soccer is the only sport in which I am interested but I cannot think of a single worthwhile soccer movie.
As for cricket, The Final Test (1953) dir: Anthony Asquith is decent, but no masterpiece. There may be great cricket movies in the Indian sub-continent, but I wouldn't know.
I have to agree that boxing is a natural for movie subjects, much as I despise it. Its inherent squalor is a gift for film noir. Horse-racing too, as horses are always camera-friendly, though the plots tend to be either sentimental or hypocritical.

Boxing movies are the most overrated genre in the whole of film. If you've seen 1 youve seen them all. Same story of the underdog overcoming personal problems to beat the big bad evil boxer at the end with a montage in the middle. I will never watch another boxing movie ever again. Sounds like you made that vow in 1975.

There's been a few footie films I've enjoyed - Escape To Victory is absurdly fun, ditto Mean Machine. Final Score perhaps , though more set around football, than about football Damned United is probably the best "serious" film I can recall about the game. Two of my favourite sports documentaries are about football. Game Of Their Lives (not to be confused with the film about the USA defeat of England of the same name) about the North Korean team's experiences and reception at the '66 World Cup, and Once In A Lifetime, about the first US Soccer League

Damned United is probably the best "serious" film I can recall about the game. Me too. I plain forgot that one although it has an honored place in my DVD collection. Apologies. Amazing to think there was once a time when "United" did not automatically mean Manchester United. Two of my favourite sports documentaries are about football. Further apologies. I should have excluded documentaries in my sweeping (and somewhat shaky) generalization. I have seen a few good ones about soccer.

Martial Arts
Enter the Dragon
Mortal Kombat
Karate Kid
Actually no sports film is even close to being in my top 25.

Motorsport is another area of sport I don't particularly enjoy to watch but have really enjoyed some films on the subject - Rush and Ford vs Ferrari/Le Mans 66 were great. Talladega Nights was good fun

Boxing and Baseball usually because they are character driven dramas. They are less team sports and therefore not bogged down with extra players, and subplots for characters you don’t care about. That’s why Rudy is the only football movie on a high level is because it’s about the man more than the Notre Dame football. Also, I think golf could make some great sports movies if you had the right script and director/actor. I do love “Tin Cup”. "That’s why Rudy is the only football movie on a high level is because it’s about the man more than the Notre Dame football." Have you watched Any Given Sunday? That one's pretty good. Varsity Blues aint bad either. I thought "Little Giants" was underrated.

That was perfect for southern culture in the U.S.
