Sorry if this has been asked before, but I’ve noticed a lot of similarities between the 2005 remake of House Of Wax and Tourist Trap. The movies are almost identical to each other. Kids car break down in a weird town, they run into a house of Wax and if I’m correct the villain has a twin brother or something.
Was this one of those instances where the studio didn’t have the rights to the name, but made a movie very similar to that movie? Or was it actually meant to be a loose remake of House Of Wax and the similarities are just pure coincidental?

I had not seen Tourist Trap until after House of Wax (but was aware of it from Famous Monsters so it came to mind when I watched HoW), but when I did finally see Tourist Trap, I noted the similarities.
I think if it was inspired by Tourist Trap, they did not want to use the name because it is too obscure. House of Wax was more famous and Warner Bros. owned it so it makes sense they would stick that name on it. It's possible the owners of Tourist Trap were paid for their silence or not in a position to do anything about it, since Tourist Trap was fairly obscure until more recently when it had a new home video release.

I don't think there were any legal accusations. WB went fairly big budget (built the town) and marketed Paris, who was huge in 05' along with with the main leads.
I enjoyed both, not top list, but worth the watch.

HOW was never a direct remake of the original, which was Victorian era, just the concept. HOW - 05', is one of my favorite horror\slashers from the noughties. It had a slow burn build up, but kept my attention and the film knew how to generate a creepy and even nostalgic horror atmosphere of slashers gone past. It was a loose remake right? I think one of the characters was even named Vincent as a homage to the original. I still consider it to be a remake of the original because it was also made by Dark Castle which made the 13 ghosts remake and house on haunted hill remake so I think in a way it was kind of meant to be a loose remake. Yeah it’s funny a lot of people give House Of wax a lot of shit because I think they look at it as a bad remake, but it’s actually a really fun movie. The kills were definitely disturbing and when Vincent turns the teens into Wax you could almost feel it. Kinda wished they had made a sequel to this, but maybe it’s for the best it didn’t.

It was a sadistic film, how could it not be, but they did a mighty fine and eerie job or re-creating the town, the performances were decent, (even Hilton with what she was required to do) and the climax in the melting wax house I thought was awesome.
The substance of the film reflected in the style and for horror films that have a simple premise and story, this is not often skillfully rendered and I thought Brian Van Holt gave a terrific psychotic performance as his twin brothers. I am going to watch again tonight. There’s definitely something about House Of Wax that makes it stand out as a really good early 2000’s horror movie. Something a lot of horror movies are missing today. I think they are missing the fun?

I haven't seen Tourist Trap, but I agree with everyone else that House of Wax (2005) is a really well made and fun horror movie. Underrated for sure.

The finger cutting scene was memorable-and the creepy way they were turned into wax figures.

I remember watching a behind the scenes video of the cast sitting together watching scenes. Elisha Cuthbert brought up how "Tourist Trap" was the director's favorite film and had an influence on the film.
