My name cham313 is short for chambre 313, a reference to the Renais film Last Year at Marienbad, one of my favorite films . There were multiple shots of the door to room 313 in the film where the room number was quite evident, similar to shots of the door to Room 237 in The Shining. I believe the film uses this number as a reference to the Game of Nim, which is shown being played at least twice, once with cards and again with matchsticks. Marienbad has been in my top 20 films since I first saw it many years ago. I'm rather shocked that I never connected your username to the 313 room in that film! My general interpretation of that film has always been that it's about the unreliability of memory, with the narrative perspective in general being that OF a working memory, of someone trying to remember what happened "last year at Marienbad." All of the loops and subtle variations and ghost-like appearances are very similar to the way that places and invents impressionistically imprint themselves on memory, and how easily memory distorts and even invents/reinvents memories.

I think mine is self explanatory.

the fleets in what can i say. i have a hard spot for sailors. After all these years I can stop wondering if you're the fleets in or the fleet sin. ...and in hindsight, it's totally obvious. The second one doesn't even make sense.

I'm not surpised about not connecting that, it is quite obscure. I've thought about using an avatar image from the film but couldn't find the right one. Maybe with the larger thumbnails on this site it might work better. I agree that another major theme is the unreliable working memory theme. Maybe the winning strategy aspect of Nim is set up as a contrast to this other theme.

Lol, have you never spoken to ErJen before? Hell no! Oops, sorry. I was responding to what I thought was a General Board thread re your ID name, and fell into the Religion Board. Note to self: avoid the Religion Boards No, don't avoid it, you just need to be aware that there are some pretty "out there" posters here.

Since I've noticed some "new" faces on here who weren't regulars on the IMDB religion board, thought it would be a good ice breaker for people to give the story behind their user name if there is one. Mine is the name of Adrian Edmondson's character from the British sitcom Bottom, a sort of follow up to the cult classic The Young Ones. This name led to one of my favourite exchanges on the programme: Lily Linneker: Hello, gentlemen, sorry to have kept you waiting. Which one of you is Mr. Hitler? Eddie: Oh, that'll be me. Lily Linneker: Any relation? Eddie: [puzzled] Well, I've got a mother. Lily Linneker: No, no no no, I meant Adolf Hitler. Eddie: Yes, that's her! I used to be a lover of everything Arthurian and always liked Morgaine/Morgana/Morgan LeFay. I also love anything to do with water - Lady of the Lake . I wish it were my real name actually.

There do seem to be some, which is cool. I'd be interested to know how these new faces discovered this site/board. Were they IMDb 1.0 users that frequented other sections of the site? Or did they find their way some other way? If the latter, that would bode well for future growth here!

My old user name, phe_de, was a suggestion from Yahoo for a user name; variants of my real name were already taken.
My current user name is composed of my initials, ph, and reflects that I like to play and I like to win. And incidentally it indicates that my two favourite football teams (soccer) are located in Leipzig and Dortmund.

I've always like the quote and it relates to religion (where I started posting) so it seemed appropriate. From my experience most people assume its being negative towards religion (and that's certainly one interpretation of it) as Opiates are addictive and frequently destructive to their users - especially if misused. Just like religion.
But Opiates were (and still are) the most effective pain killers known to man and at the time of the saying's creation they were also used by "creative types" to "free their minds" and "experience new wonders". So you could read positive aspects to the saying too. Depends how you look at it.

In what way am I a "sodomite", ErJen? Unlike you, I'm married to a woman.
If you regard anal intercourse as normal, you're a sodomite.
This is an innocuous thread regarding how people came to choose their user names. Tell us, then, why you brought up the topic of anal intercourse...

Maybe the winning strategy aspect of Nim is set up as a contrast to this other theme. Perhaps the most iconic image from the film is the view of the terrace with only the people (but none of the objects) casting shadows. That might make a good avatar, though the "square" avatar format would squeeze the widescreen format of the image. The Nim game has always been an aspect of the film I've been fascinated with but have never really been able to fit well into any workable interpretation. Then again, maybe part of the point is that in dreams/memory there will always be aspects that we can't fit into the coherent narratives we try to make for ourselves.
