It starred Mary Pick ford in dual roles. The movie was slightly controversial, since it dealt with taboo subjects of class, abuse, substance issues, and marital discontent. There is also a murder in the movie. I highly recommend it. I also want to see Little Annie Rooney.

I have seen Stella Maris and I remember enjoying the film, but that was years ago now. Definitely need to re-watch.
Marshal Neilan, the director, made several impressive films with Pickford, including: Amarilly of Clothes Line Alley, M'Liss and, imo their best collaboration, Daddy Long Legs.
I find him to be quite a sensitive director who in these films treated Pickford's screen personality with respect. I also find his visual composition of scenes to be often quite beautiful and his blocking effective.

Yes, Pickford plays two roles here. One role is a beautiful, but crippled heiress, the other is a plain uneducated orphan. Both girls happen to be in love with the same man played by Conway Tearle. Unfortunately Tearle's character is married to a vindictive shrew, played by Marcia Manon. Kudos to Pickford for really embracing the role of the orphan, as she is virtually unrecognisable in the part, wearing no make-up. I would normally be the last person to recommend against watching a silent film, but... I kinda hate this movie. The Heiress and Tearle's character's are so boring you find yourself rooting for the orphan and the shrewish wife. Of course being a cliche'd Hollywood romance, both of these "undesirable" representations of femininity are swept aside in the end to make way for the "perfect" couple. Maybe I'm being a bit harsh, but I find this a frustrating film, that sends the complete wrong message.

I think the guy saw Unity as a daughter or niece. I'm not sure he knew she had crush on him. If I had a cruel, drunkard wife like that, I would say good riddance as well. Although a little background info would have been nice. Maybe she came from a cold family, or the marriage was arranged. It's possible he neglected her or cheated on her as well.
