Apparently, animated film & tv will be the engine to keep the industry moving through & past pandemic.
I'd bet we see a Best Pic Oscar for an animated feature... not starring talking bears or socks or boats though. I bet we start seeing animated dramas coming down the pipe soon enough, on par with live action drama.
The Academy loves projecting being in the pop culture moment, what better way than to reward the next new wave.

This will not happen for the foreseeable future, the brick headed Academy has less animation respect than the average movie reviewer, which is already pretty low. Arguably the entire reason for Best Animated Feature's existence is to keep animated films away from Best Picture.

Arguably the entire reason for Best Animated Feature's existence is to keep animated films away from Best Picture. But animated movies have continued to be nominated since the creation of that category. To my knowledge, only two animated films have been nominated for Best Picture since, Up and Toy Story 3. However, this was only after the questionable decision of expanding the nominees to ten. To further this controversy, the Academy was even accused of nominating films that had no chance of winning for the sake of artificially boosting some film's reputation. This was corrected soon after and no animated film has been nominated since.
